Valve in Grey drain roof pipe

I have traced a grey tank smell to an area under the kitchen cupboard where there is a valve in the pipe that goes to the roof. Can anyone tell me what this is and what might be wrong with it. The valve is round with slots in it and looks like there might be a spring in there.

it is a drain vent, normally used under cabinets where it is not possible to vent a drain pipe to the roof. you should be able to unscrew or pop off the top of it. remove the flapper and clean it, then apply a thin film of Vaseline to the rubber flapper to keep it pliable, then re-install. they usually get dried out or crusty and then they don't seal properly.

Unscrew it and toss it away. Go to ACE and get the better spring loaded breather and and screw it on. Less than $5.

As stated by chopperbill, it is a Studor air admittance valve. Buy a good one, they work better and last much longer. A good one will run $15-$25.
