KOAs

As a general rule we do not stay at KOA since their prices have gotton so high. Most KOAs are in the 45-50 dollar range now. That being said, I wanted to give KUDOS to the Memphis KOA which is located in Arkansas just outside of Memphis. We stayed there March of 2008 and on our way back to Texas from Indiana we pulled in there again yesterday evening. While registering the lady (sorry didn't get her name) at the desk remembered us, gave us $10 discount from our previous stay even though we no longer had the coupon. In addition she applied our KOA camping card discount making the stay $30.80 which is more reasonable. We thank them:Dfor their courtesy and would recommend this KOA to anyone passing that way. It is right on the Interstate, easy off and easy on. Just goes to show you all KOAs are not cut from the same cloth.

KOA's need to change their image as being a high priced, nothing special, ala carte campground. There is campground in Michigan that quit the KOA, did not change their prices and is busier than before. To me he is still too expensive but it just shows that KOA's are getting a bad reputation.

We just finished a 7000 mile trip across the USA. I will never stay at another KOA again ! In previous cross country trips we would always stay at KOA'S. My kids like the pool and activities at the KOA'S. We ended up staying at 6 KOA'S on this trip, average price per night $40 +. They would charge me extra for my girl's, this really ticked me off. I even became a value card member for this trip. They wanted $71.00 for a pull thru 50 amp full hookup one night in West Yellowstone. I emailed corporate KOA about my frustration with them. They advertise as family friendly but then want to charge extra per child. We only stayed at KOA'S at first on this trip, then I stayed at other campgounds. Some of the non KOA'S were better than KOA. I don't understand charging extra for children, I'm paying for a campsite. AS a kid growing up we would stay at KOA'S. I miss the good ole days.

We agree about KOA's charging too much and needing to upgrade their image. As a rule we dont usually stay at them however we just wanted to point out the Memphis KOA was an exception to the rule. We usually use our Passport America and Campclub USA for overnight stays while on the road. We try to use Thousand Trails for longer stays and if that is not possible we will use our Coast to Coast.

Jim, how far outside of Memphis is that KOA, wife and I are overdue a trip to Beale Street. I miss the ribs.

We stayed at the Tom Sawyer RV park in W. Memphis Ark. while on our way back to Texas after the Goshen rally. It is a nice park and right on the Mississippi river with fantastic views. They have both concrete and gravel sites, and shaded and non-shaded.

We heartily second the motion, Jay! We stayed a week at Tom Sawyer's, which is an easy drive into Memphis. J.D. loves watching barges on the river and I rather enjoyed that myself. CrazyScotsman, if you get to Memphis, have some ribs at the Rendezvous for me. Love that place.

When we stayed there we used the local guide for a barbecue restaurant called Central Barbecue. The brisket was good but Stella had the ribs and she said they were not that good. They are advertised as the best in the city.

The next night,we ate at Dyer's hamburgers on Beale St. They are the store that advertises to use 100 year old cooking grease. We saw it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and it was rated well also. The burgers are very small but tasty.

100 year old grease...wow, I don't know about that. Seems like it would get 'old' or 'worn out' after a few uses.

I think a lot of it was just hype. The original owner kept using the same grease that he filtered every day and only added to it to keep the level up. There's probably not a drop of the original grease left. Still tasted pretty good.

We will have to try that place next time we up that way. We like to go to Robinsonville, MS to the casinos once in awhile and Memphis is only about 35 miles north of there.
