Below are a few ideas. I have not stayed at Illinois Beach State Park but it may be your best bet. I have visited Burnidge-Paul Wolff and it is nice but is power/water only. That may be okay for a few days. I have been using Lehman's for several years. I stayed at Happy Acres once.

We enjoy Illinois Beach State Park very much. We've been there many times. Only electric service like most state parks in the north but much more scenic than private campgrounds - especially any private campground that you'll find in northeast Illinois. I'ts right on Lake MIchigan with great lake access, a nice beach and very nice hiking and biking trails.

Chicago area campgrounds

Since we are completely new to traveling I checked a Woodalls Campground directory out of my local library and thought it was really packed with lots of pertinent info. Don't many of you use these sources to find campgrounds in unfamiliar areas?

This was the best one in the area for me. It's open all year round. WiFi and cable last I heard. Kinda of pricey, even in the off season. But, the price is worth it.

Do Not Stay at RV PARK- HIDEAWAY LAKES, IL and here's why

After having a h*ll of a time, I finally found this place. The office was closed, there was no provision for after hours check-in. No phone number to call. No phone to use if you had a number for the park. No maps, no nothing. Well, there were tons of trees to run your RV into.

Finally found a guy riding around on his golf cart.He was dead drunk and trying to find a non-existent cigarette machine but he led me to the full hookup sites. This was the last help I go during my stay there.

Site very poorly laid out for today's RV's. Reminds me of a picket line for tying up your horse. Shared water outlets.

This place is a maze of roads. Some of which, end with no notice. The roads are narrow, non are marked and a lot of them have no turn around. Be prepared to backup. The road in is one way. The road out is also one way...but, find the exit. The people in the park were nice.

The managers, office personnel and workers couldn't care if you stayed there or not. The camp store is dirty, very cluttered, and just try to find something there. I know why Trailer Life slammed the place. There seemed to be a lot of family type stuff to do. But, after the hassle I had with finding a full hookup site, I wasn't too concerned about amenities. All I wanted was out.

Either arrive before sundown or bring a might big light, radar and a gps cause you're going to need it. Oh yeah, there were d*mned few lights in the park. They used a Christmas light to mark the sites.

Make sure your propane is full before you get there because the electricity has been known to go out for days at a time allowing everything to freeze in the near zero temps.

It's aptly named. GPS location - N41 38.775 W88 24.54

You have been warned.

Personally, we prefer using the Trailer Life Campground directory. To us it is easier to read.

Looking for a recommendation for a campground in the west michigan area, near the lake in the Muskegon area? We are considering traveling to pick up a 5th wheel we purchased at Lakeshore Rv in Muskegon. Thanks.

John,

There are none within the city limits of Chicago that I am aware of.

Consider trying www.rvparkreviews.com to search for campgrounds (CGs) nearby. My home CG is near Marengo and that is getting out there to the NW a bit. There are CGs to the south in nearby cities. There is also a casino that has a CG to the south. What month are you hoping to visit Chicago? I can give you more tips based on that. Maybe even meet you :) I live in Streamwood, IL

Your review is hilarious!! I couldn't stop laughing while reading this - and thinking about a similar problem with too many trees in a campground we tried out once! This story would be a great short film!
