Hot water heater/winterize

In a recent RV magazine article about winterizing the hot water heater the writer wrote that after draining the hot water heater, LEAVE THE ANODE ROD OUT. I have previous thoughts that it was best to leave the rod in so as not to dry out the inside of the heater -- any thoughts?

I always take the rod out when the unit is out of service. Its does not rust in tight that way. When ready to use rv, just wire brush the threads insert and off you go.

I do the same. When done camping I take the plug out of the water heater and drain it. I put the plug back in the next time we head out. I have experienced no problems, and Dometic rep at Heartland rally said that practice was fine. Happy camping.
