Removing steps in a BH3670

Hi everyone,
We have a BH3670 are are thinking of putting some type of hinge on the steps to store shoes. Has anyone removed the steps and if so how---are they screwed only from the top? how many screws? approximate location? Do you know if I can put some type of hinge on them, etc, etc.

The factory told us they are screwed on each side and they make a cut in the carpet before putting in the screws. Someone else - they may chime in here - has done it, but we cannot find the screws by feeling, magnet, or hammer. Ours must have gone under the carpet never to be found again! We hope to be at the factory in Sept. for some other work and hope maybe they can find them!!!!!

They're there, just look or feel harder. There's one longggg screw on each side of the tread. They are a square or phillips drive. Just took ours off yesterday and am doing the hinge thing also. Can't decide what size piano hinge, bought an 1 1/2 x 48" and thinking maybe a 2"x 46" would be better.

Using an ice pick was able to find the cut in the carpet and the screws - thanks for the encouragement!! Now, has anyone figured out how to put a hidden hinge underneath? Not sure I want a hinge showing on the top.
