We will be headed to the Mount Rushmore area in a month or so. Are there any RV parks you guys would reccomend or any to avoid?
Thanks

We just came from there last fall. There are some places that look good but not that great when you get there. Mt. Rushmore is very commercial. Went there years ago and it was much better. While your there go to Crazy Horse and see the evening light show. Much more intresting than Rushmore.

In the same area of Crazy Horse you can take a trip around the Wilderness Loop, Needles loop and if you stay at Custers Gulch just outside of Custer SD you can see them all. Rushmore is a little further away but you can drive through Custer State Park and the surrounding areas. We were there the last of July and they were getting ready for the Sturgis Rally.

Before you make any reservation check out Custers Gulch RV park. Here's some pictures of the park.

I would suggest Rafter Bar J in between Custer and Hill City. We have stayed there for the last 5 years. Ask for the Island loop large spaces with trees. Not all the sites in this loop have 50 amp though.

We were there last year in July and stayed at the Elkhorn Ridge RV park. It is between Spearfish and Deadwood. It is a bit north of Rushmore, but a lot less people and a very, very nice RV park.A very large pool, 2 hot tubs, basketball court, and horseshoe pits. A lot of fun for the whole family.

Wherever you stay, enjoy your stay. It is pretty country!

We stayed after Rafter J last fall and it was great. Deer walking all over the place. Nice big meadow out from the park. Close to Rushmore, Crazy Horse, etc.

We're gonna be there the first two weeks of June...need new driver's licenses. We'll be staying at Rushmore Shadows and then Hart Ranch. Maybe we can get together if you'll be there then.

We stayed at Rushmore Shadows once and Hart Ranch once. Hart Ranch is beautiful but in a valley and my cell signal was zero. (they have great wi-fi) Rushmore Shadows was okay but it was cold and rainy when we were there and it was a muddy mess, but that was several years ago. Both are convenient to Mt Rushmore. Hart Ranch photos attached

It's hard to pick a park since theres so many but we picked "Rafter Bar J " between the 3rd-4th week of June.
Our 5 year old grandson will be with us for a month so things will be interesting!

Thanks for the help.

When we were full time we stayed several months at Custer's Gulch near Custer. We just loved it. The sites are nice, big grass sites, all are backed up to a pine forest. The people that own the campground are very nice.

We stayed at High Plains RV Park, Piedmont, SD just outside of Rapid City On I-90 exiits 40 & 44. It has full hook up sites for $15 a night and right behind Jacks Campers and centrally located to all the sghtseeing venues, well stocked store and a good service center and No pressure to buy a SOB. Surprisingly quiet for being off of the highway and the owners are very nice.

I second that. Rafter J Bar is one of the nicest parks we have stayed in anywhere. We have done repeat trips for the last 3 years we enjoy it so much.

We ended staying at Rafter J for 5 days towards the end of May. Park was great and we rated it at 5 star.

We stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch in Hill City last May and it was fine. Pretty convenient to everything and we had cell/broadband service. Right down the road not far was Hill City KOA which was just opening up the last week of May for the season. Also Custer State park has a cg but they were not opened yet. Another good place to visit is in Hot Springs for the mammoth digs. Lots of fun.

We stayed at Heartland Camp and RV in Hermosa. About 18-20 miles from Mt. Rushmore, South of Rapid City. Very nice place and good people for management. We are returning 8-8 for the Sturgis Cycle Rally ------ WHOO HOOOO Sturgis Bound

We stayed at Hart Ranch. It is a beautiful park. It has everything you need right at the park and was a good location for visiting the surrounding areas.
