Roof nail??

I noticed this weekend there was about a 1/2" tall pointy "object" sticking up under the rubber roof by the ladder. I couldn't tell what it was but i'm guessing it was a roofing nail or staple, I think. I don't want it to poke through the rubber, I wanted to put a small block of wood over it and smack it with a hammer but I thought it would punch through.
Do you know if they use nails, staples (that would be my guess), screws or glue? I would like to know before I smash it...

I've had 2 staples push thru the membrane. Both were on the radius, where it curved down the side. A little blob of Dicor caulk took care of it.

I had the same thing happen. A little strip of EternaBond tape did the trick. Been on for three years now.
