Under the TV for Pre trip Maintenance

Two days ago while turning a right hand corner with my Dodge CTD, I heard a strange rubbing type of noise.....metal to metal. Thought it might be a vibration in my exhaust system. Noise only lasted for a few seconds and heard it only the one time.

Well this afternoon I was under the truck doing routine maintenance, oil change, fuel filter, lube etc. Since we are leaving next week for a trip to New Mexico I did my usual under the truck inspection. I was just getting ready to crawl out from under when I happened to look at the carrier bearing on the rear drive shaft.

Now I know where the noise came from....the bearing was almost totally trashed. I really don't understand why it was not making more noise...but it destroyed itself very quietly. It never would have made it through our up coming trip!

So tomorrow, I will be the proud owner of new carrier bearing!

Moral of the story.....You can never check too often or too much. Saved myself from being stuck on the side of the road!
