NOTE: (UPDATE-0 RESERVED SITES LEFT ) You can possibly still get in the campground, but not necessarily right with the group. The campground is not huge so you will not be very far away from us no matter where they can put you. Please call the campground to see if there are sites available. The park is located just northwest of Williamsburg off Interstate 64, Exit 231a (Croaker Road). Nearby attractions include: Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens Amusement Park, Water Country USA, Jamestown, Yorktown Victory Park, and more. The Rally rate is good for early arrival or departure. Contact the Chapter Leader, Gus Funderburg (g_funderburg@yahoo.com) for any questions.

Hudson has "volunteered" to lead a group trip to Busch Gardens on Sat, May 14 for anyone who wants to go. We'll firm up departure time, travel arrangements, etc as we get closer to the rally date. This will be a "Pay your own way" event. Check out http://www.buschgardens.com/bgw/Purchase/tickets.aspx for pricing information. I believe the campground has tickets available with a small discount.
Of course, other historic and fun places are located nearby, so those will also be available for your touring pleasure.

When you make your reservation, PLEASE send me an email or post a message in this thread so I can keep track of who is coming - THANKS! I will try to keep a running list of attendees posted here:

Underwear; shoes; socks; hats; OK you get the point.

If you have bicycles, bring them. National battlefields are close by and very bicycle friendly

AND, for the ladies that like to shop, lots of shopping close by.

GUS: I know that, unless we are out of town for some reason, we will be there.

With all these early rally plans There may be no spots left for us by the time I get to pick my vacation - and I get to start picking it in December

With all these early rally plans There may be no spots left for us by the time I get to pick my vacation - and I get to start picking it in December

Unfortunately, it is a real problem. Unless we lock in a campground early, they (the CG's) can't guarantee us spots, or in some cases even a particular weekend. And having a rally in a popular spot exacerbates the problem. It sometimes becomes a win-lose situation. You get a good campground and a good date, but sites are limited. Hope you and Deb can attend. Although we only have 25 guaranteed sites close together, the CG will still accept reservations at the rally rate for any other spots they have remaining.

What kind of a lame excuse is that Pete??

Just say "Deb and I will be there!!" and let it go at that. No reason for you to be out of town that particular weekend. Besides, Larry the Cable Guy and Sam will be there so it wouldn't be a Virginia get-together without you and Deb. If I've only got Larry to pick on, it won't be half as much fun as if I have both you and Larry.:cool:

Well since I've gone on a much needed diet, I've canceled my trip to a wonderful *brewery* in San Diego and instead we are going to stay "home" this Spring. So we are all signed up for the Williamsburg rally. I don't remember what site we're on, when we're coming, or when we're leaving but it's written down somewhere and I'll post it when I find it again. I do remember it is a back in ... whee!

For those of you who haven't been around me when I'm not drinking beer (nor any other alcohol, nor even smoking any cigars ... #@$#@^ing diet) you'll discover that I either talk a lot more or a lot less depending upon the sunshine (I guess). Fortunately Deb has asked me to lead the excursion to Busch Gardens where I know better than to have my mouth open (bugs aren't on my diet so I intend not to swallow any while riding on the front row of Griffon et al).

So anyone who won't be at Cherokee, I guess we will see you in Williamsburg!!

I've added a site map with everyone's locations on it on post # 1 (Pete and Hudson are approximations - still have to confirm their site #). I have a call into the campground to see if I can get a few more sites. Hopefully they'll call me back soon. You'll want to be here early for this one. With Calvin, Pete, and Hudson currently scheduled into back-in sites, we'll assemble an ad hoc judging panel and grade their efforts. There'll be a nice prize for the winner! Should be interesting. Calvin is steady as a rock, Hudson has his own Zip Code, and well, many of us saw Pete at Cape Hatteras :D.

Only if you have a strong stomach Jim. And the ability to put things out of your mind because it is certainly not something you want to remember. It's just too scary to keep the image in your mind. Pete backing his Big Horn...sure is entertaining but sure is scary!!:D

We plan on leaving Saturday free as a tour day for those who wish to explore the history, culture, or fun of the area. However, we will also have a few laid-back events (e.g., a wine and cheese tasting, hot dog lunch, etc) for those of you who have seen it all and just want to relax and enjoy the comeraderie. We are scheduling our pot luck for Saturday evening, so if you take advantage of the day to tour around, you'll probably want to think about a dish to bring that will be easy to prepare so you aren't rushed. I still have to confer with my "event coordinator" (she's out of town right now), but I'll work up an agenda for posting soon.

Although our reserved group sites are all taken, you still may be able to get in the campground if you would like to join us. Contact the campground to see if they have sites available. I'm working on a "light" agenda since this is an area that I suspect will entice folks out to see the sights on Friday and Saturday. My early thoughts are: a Friday morning continental breakfast at the "Landmark Diner" (our trailer) for early arrivers; a Friday night dinner, with dishes provided by the early arrivers, so the Friday arrivers won't have to try to get something together (we'll probably do burgers and dogs); a Saturday afternoon Wine and Cheese tasting for those who are not out enjoying the local sights; a Saturday night Potluck dinner in the campground clubhouse around 7:30 to give folks time to get back from sightseeing (I'll be looking for volunteers to provide patriotic themed decorations) with contests and prizes; a Sunday morning light continental breakfast.

The theme for the rally will be PATRIOTIC. (Big surprise, huh?) So, if you have some patriotic decorations, or want to purchase a few (please don't spend a lot), decorate your campsite with patriotic items (and yes Debra, I'm aware that Pink Flamingoes are not considered patriotic items!) We will give a prize for best decorated campsite.

Please plan on bringing a small, unwrapped toy that Deb and I will collect and bring back to the Toys for Tots headquarters right around the corner from us at Quantico Marine Corps base. More details to follow soon.

In case you haven't checked recently, we're up to 30 rigs! This is a great showing. Deb and I are looking forward to seeing all our friends again and meeting several new ones! Don't forget about our charity donation, Toys for Tots (bring a new, unwrapped toy - not too big, Deb and I do have to get them all home!). Also, remember we're having a site decorating contest (patriotic theme). I will be posting a final agenda soon, and will also send it out by email. As always, activities are optional, but the more you can attend, the more people/friends you will meet. With so much to see in the area, we are planning on having prize give-aways both Friday and Saturday night so everyone has a chance to win something, but still stay out late if needed. See you all soon. Post questions here or send me an email.

Having a great time here in the Williamsburg, VA area. We have spent 3 days visiting Colonial Williamsburg, Historic Jamestown and Historic Yorktown. Also did some shopping and Tavern eating :)

Having a nice time at the rally too. Had an impromptu potluck breakfast (pre-rally). Some great night time campfires, a nice continental breakfast over at Gus and Debs and a great hot dog and hamburger dinner at the club house with the entire rally bunch.

Funny last night were all of the guys grilling the food. 6 of us brought grills up to the club house to do the deed. All 6 were Weber Q grills. It was hilarious. Had a Weber convention and a Heartland rally broke out :)

Well thanks Gus & Debra we are home safe, at least John & I and the truck are home! Our Bighorn, on the other hand, is at Crossroads RV waiting for the insurance adjuster.

A word to the wise, just because you have clearance on one end of the gasoline isle overhang, DOES NOT mean that you will be clear on the other end. Stopped on I-95 in Maryland and as we exited the pumps there was a hill at the end of the concrete gas island pad. As the truck went up, so did the trailer and we ripped the bedroom AC out.

The tears have stopped flowing, it was totally unpredictable and we are heartbroken. As long as we are OK the rig can be repaired and we have every confidence that Crossroads will get us repaired!

Rrloren
05-16-2011, 04:55 PM
Deb, sorry to hear of your problem but I think Crossroads will do a repair you will be very happy with. I did a dumb thing with our Sundance just a couple months after getting it by backing into our house causing a few hundred dollars of damage to the house and nearly $2m to the coach. Crossroads did the repair and you cannot tell where it was damaged. Only problem is it took a couple months with insurance and ordering parts , etc.
Hopefully yours will be faster.

Deb and I arrived at home after a short layover at our local Cracker Barrel :D. Must be bad luck day. We too had a minor incident while parking at my son's house. Got a little too close to an overhanging limb. Found out that the rubber roof material will stretch quite a bit when struck by a sharp, heavy limb. Have a couple of pinholes that I've put a temporary patch on until I can get some Dicor roof patch material. Needless to say, we had a blast this weekend. Thanks to all who attended for making it a great time. Hope to see all of you again soon.

Well, since it appears to be "what happened to your RV after the VA rally" confession time, I'll fess up too. As I was fueling at a fuel island that had a huge downward slope entering it, I noticed water coming out of the bottom corner of the gen compartment on the off door side. At the same time, water was dripping on my arm from the roof of the RV. The roof water was coming from the fuel island roof, so that I figured out. But what was the source of the water dripping from the corner of the RV? On round 2 of fueling ($75 limit per round), I thought I heard the faint sound of the water pump. Uh oh! Went round to the door side, steps down, door opened... Yep, water everywhere. So a minor flood. Epic in proportion, but not biblical. Turns out that 1, we left the water pump on from the previous stop and 2, the bouncing down I-64 West was enough to allow the kitchen faucet to move to the ON position. On this fixture, you pull the handle down to the side of the fixture and I really think that the weight of the metal handle combined with the road forces allowed that thing to come ON! It has happened before too, but the mess was not as bad. The faucet came on during travel and when I connected water at the campground, the faucet started spewing before we got inside. Oops.

So, I have been mopping up water, wiping down cabinets, soaking up water up to 6" into the carpet around the island and waiting for vinyl wrapped trim at the floor to dry and explode. Then I'll know what needs to be replaced. Unlike John and Deb, and like Gus and Deb, my repairs will be minor, just a few trim pieces.

Keep your chin up John and Deb. Things will be all better, soon!

Wait! Wait! Has this turned into a "who had the worst boo boo 'fess up thread?"

We had problems as well. Had stopped at northern end of bay/bridge tunnel at the rest area and a nice young couple stopped to say, "You lost something on the bridge just after you came out of the tunnel." A walk around the coach revealed that bike raack and bikes were missing! About that time a bridge police officer showed up to ask if we had lost something! Then he wanted to see driver's license, registration and insurance info. I was ready to put out my hands for the hand cuffs!

Turned out....no harm, no foul! No one hit the bikes and, except for a truly messed up cover, not much else was damaged when the bridge patrol delivered our bikes. And, thank you Lord, no one was hurt trying to avoid our "droppings.

Sorry for everyone else's problems. But, "STUFF" can be replaced.

Safe trippin' from here on...............Have it on good authority since we were following Calvin and Judy that they'd like for our boo boo to cover them as well!

I am so thankful that no one suffered injuries other than a few cases of bruised pride. Enough is enough! May all our future travels be safe with many miles traveled with broad smiles.

Well said Gus! :)

We're packing up this morning to leave Calvin and Judy Hicks's place and traveling together to NJ. :D Sure hope my fix on the bike rack holds up to more interstate travel. See you folks in Goshen.

Debra and I want to thank all our wonderful Heartland family for making this such an enjoyable week-end (except for the traveling part on Monday!). We couldn't have pulled this off without the support of many dedicated "volunteers" (OK - some folks were volunteered) who helped with setups, cleanups, judging, cooking, campfires, etc - the list is way too long to mention everyone by name. We cherish the friends and memories we have made, both locally and at rallies all over the east coast. Hopefully, our rallying will someday expand to match Eric and Dorothy's epic journeys. At least that's our goal.

As you may recall, we had a great Toys for Tots collection at the rally - thanks to all who gave a gift for a less fortunate child. This is the slow season for the Toys for Tots folks, so it has been somewhat of a challenge coordinating a time to get together with them to drop everything off. However, Debra and I successfully dropped off all the toys at the National Foundation Headquarters in Triangle, Virginia yesterday. Hopefully they will will soon bring a smile to a youngster's face. Thank You Everyone!

That is very good news Gus.
And thanks again all you and Debra did to make that happen for the kids.
