NOTICE – CLUB FRAME ISSUE

18-NOV-2010

Dear Heartland Owners Club Member,

This notice pertains only to Club Members who received a Ladder Mount frame system with their Club kit. Those who received a Flat Mount frame system are not affected.

The Heartland Owners Club supplies an Owners Club Plaque, engraved with your Owners Club Number and a frame system to mount the plaque into. PLAK-R is the supplier of this system to the Club.

Most Club Members request and receive a Ladder Mount frame system. This system comes with the plaque, a rectangular frame and 2 ladder brackets. The brackets mount to the vertical rails of the ladder. The brackets have a hole down through the top where a large pin drops through it. The pin is part of a pin-pad assembly that comes already mounted to the back of the frame. Over the last 2 years, this pin-pad has gone through 2 design changes. Version 2 pin-pad is a failed design. If you have a Version 2 pin-pad (center image below), you must take immediate action. For now, remove the frame and plaque from the ladder. You may leave the ladder brackets in place.

This version is fine. The pin-pad is cemented to the frame with ABS glue by the manufacturer.

Follow either of the two (inexpensive) methods outlined below to improve your pin-pad mount to the frame to ensure you will not lose your plaque a frame (costly).

Version 2 – Pin-Pad Improvement Method 1
PLAK-R recommends this method. Follow the steps below:

  1. Remove both push-pins from both pads by pressing them out from the back side. Save the pins for step 3
  2. Using ABS or All Purpose Cement (hardware store, Lowes, Home Depot etc.), apply glue to the large flat surface of one pin-pad only. Apply glue to the back of the frame where that pin-pad will mate to
  3. Carefully, yet firmly press the pin-pad onto the back of the frame where it was removed from. Reinsert the 2 plastic push-pins removed in step 1 above
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other pin-pad
  5. Allow to dry for 2 hours, then reinstall plaque and frame to ladder brackets on RV

Version 2 – Pin-Pad Improvement Method 2
This method is what some owners have done and what upgrades your version 2 frame to version 3. Follow the steps below:

  1. Purchase 4 each, 3/4” long x 1/4” diameter machine thread screws or bolts, lock washers and nuts. Some will purchase stainless steel, some will paint the hardware flat black before starting the project
  2. Remove both push-pins from both pads by pressing them out from the back side. Discard the pins
  3. Replace the pins with the screws/bolts through the front of the frame and through pin-pad
  4. Install the lock washer and nut and torque tightly
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other pin-pad
  6. Reinstall plaque and frame to ladder brackets on RV

This notice is being provided to Club Members as a courtesy of the Club. The Club is not participating in any improvement costs or replacement plaques or frames. At any time needed or desired, replacement or additional plaques, frames, mounts, suction cups and other hardware may be purchased directly from our supplier PLAK-R (866-427-5257).
