Thought it might be fun to start a translation list for those not in the know, I'll start with a few simple ones I know, please feel free to add your own, and if possible I'll translate!

US - UK
Thumb tack- Drawing pin
Elevator - Lift
Side walk - Pavement
Highway - Motorway
Bar - Pub
Garbage - Rubbish
Truck - Pick up
Railroad -Railway
Garbage can - Dustbin

another thought, we have a lot of 'slang' words over here which might be useful if you visit
UK Slang - Meaning
Fag - Cigarette
Buttie - Sandwich
Lager - Light Beer
Ale - Dark Beer
Wife beater - Strong light beer
brew - Cup of tea

Now if Y'all come down yonder round my place to the local gas, grocery, bait and tackle shop yer likely to get beat up when you ask bubba, who's wearing a wife beater and holding a six pack of his favoite brew, to spot you a fag after ordering a buttie mate.:eek:

Here are some similar with different meaning

slang - meaning
Fag (or fagget) - homosexual
wife beater - a man who hits his spouse
brew - usually a beer but has been know to mean a cup of coffee
interstate - highway
highway - a paved road
gas - gasoline
fuel - usually means diesel fuel
hood - the cover of a motor vehicle covering the engine compartment
gas tank - the container on a motor vehicle which stores fuel
Smokey - a police officer
Bear in the air - police in a helicopter or airplane
county mountie - a county law enforcement
five Oh - police
cop - police
feds - federal police
ice - federal police (Immigration Customs Enforcement)
RV - recreational vehicle which can mean a motor home, fifth wheel or even a travel trailer
SKP - a member of the Escapee RVer club. If you say SKP fast it sounds like escapee
SKIP - an Escapee member
Yankee - someone who lives in the northern part of the United States
Rebel - someone who lives in the southern part of the United States
Snowbird - an RVer who travels from the northern colder climates to the southern warmer climates in the winter to escape the snow

Also each state has a nickname for its residents. For example: A Texas resident is called a Texan; an Indiana resident is called a Hooser; an Ohio resident is called a Buckeye, etc. That is a start. I am sure some others folks will add more.

Even in the US there are differences in where you live. I was raised in the South wearing a toboggan (Soft knit hat with a tassel ball on top) and in the north a toboggan is a sled. My wife calls me a sled head.
