I know that carrying something on the back of a 5th wheel is bad for the frame (according to my manual) but what about towing a(5x8) small trailer

I can't comment on the frame//warranty thing but I do know that "double towing" in many states is illegal. I thought about a small trailer for my motorcycle but unless it is the type that is a solid mount, it is not legal here.

We tow our smart car behind our 3580 where legal when not she drives the car until we get to where its legal we towed arout 6000 miles last year Fred

We also tow our golf cart behind the BC. It's legal in TN but most of the surrounding states it's not.

Most states that do allow double towing require brakes on the second towed trailer/vehicle that operate with the TV control.
