While boon docking this winter and running the inverter I was always running out to the batteries and checking the voltage. Not that I am lazy or so as you know I gave up my new fancy pants remote controlled fire place. 
I hooked up this $2.99 Harbor Freight test meter up so I could take a peek when ever the mood stuck me. Installed it in the skinny entry way closet and ran the wire down to the 12v panel. I Velcroed it to the wall so I could unhook it and with another set of leads I could check out other things as needed. The little chart shows voltage and percent of charge. Not fancy but works for me.
