Help....with plastic fitting out of top of hot water heater

It is threaded. 1/2 N.P.T.

Once you get that one removed make sure to get a brass checkvalve for the replacement.

If it breaks off in the inlet, you may have to "chisel" out the pieces. Do this carefully with a screwdriver or similar device. Others have had great success with a 1/2" NPT threading tool. Be sure to replace with the brass equivalent.

There is an inexpensive tool made explicitly for removing a broken plastic nipple. Its called a nipple extractor and its available in most any hardware store. Its usually with the sprinkler/irrigation stuff. If you spend $5 on one of these gadgets, the "broken nipple" problem goes from a nightmare to a minor inconvenience.
