Myakka State Park 21st Century Loop NOW OPEN

Florida has an amazing range of State Parks as most in Florida know. Like most state parks around the country, tho, the camp sites were built for the old generation of campers and can often be cramped for today's multi-slide units. And, most state parks have electric and water only.

Myakka State Park just completed the new Palmetto Ridge Campground as part of a planned retrofit of all campsites. The new Palmetto Ridge sites are BIG and WIDE with wonderful grading, drainage and SEWER to all sites. Brand new camp furniture and sparkling bathhouses complete the package. Over the coming years the park will retrofit the two existing campgrounds for larger sites with a small net increase in total park sites when all is done in the next few years.

Palmetto Ridge is open NOW for drive up campers. The Reserve America, the state park reservation system is now LIVE as of this date. BOOK NOW I'm sure these sites will go FAST. We've got dates for the fall and next winter...but then we live here :). We'll post pictures when we camp this fall. You'll be amazed at the range of things to do at Myakka and its only a short drive to the beautiful beaches and wealth of cultural activities of Sarasota.

Sounds wonderful Randy. Thanks for posting and sharing your state with all of us. We will be Floridians again this winter so maybe we can hit this campground for a visit.

Well we're finally going to spend some time in the new loop at Myakka this week. A little hiking and a little kayaking on the Myakka River in the Wilderness area in the south portion of the park. Look for some up close alligator pics on the blog after we return.

Wondeful weekend at Myakka. Lots of pics and stuff on our blog. This is must see visit in Florida. This gator must have been 15 feet long. Quite interesting when viewed from a 12' kayak! Karen, who said she'd never do this again....at the beginning of the trip...took this pic on the way back from our paddle. Now she says she'd do it again! 2nd pic, by the way, is what a big gator looks like when you get too close and he wants you to know it!

Great tip on a super new set of campsites at Myakka...the name of the loop on the Reservation site is Palmetto Ridge.
We stayed there on Dec24-26 2011 based on your tip...really liked it and have booked for New Years 2012
