New Orleans Campgrounds

We are considering going on to New Orleans after the Chapter Rally in Canton TX next month. Does anyone have any campground suggestions?

There is a French Quarter RV Park. Has anyone stayed there and is it in walking distance to the quarters?

Their's a state park just over the river minutes (15-20) from down town/french quarters, Bayou Segnette State Park, we have stayed their a time or two it's a nice park. Can't be of any help in the city.

We stayed there a few years ago... expensive... in a poor part of town but park has security 24x7... can walk to top end of French Quarter but I wouldn't do it after dark.

You might try military campgrounds, there are 2 listed there. We were in Gulfport last week and stayed at the Naval Construction Batallion base and drove into NO. If you go check out the WWII museum.

We stayed at Pontchartrain Landing last year. It has security, shuttle into NO and accepted our Passport America. Caught black drum from the bank. I understand the military campground was closed due to Katrina but they may be building another.

Nancy and I want to stop for a day or 2 in New Orleans with the RV this week on our way to TX. We'd like suggestions on RV parks in or very near New Orleans.

Thanks,

Jim

We recently stayed in Slidell at Pine Crest RV Park on Hwy 433. It's just off I-10, and 20 - 30 minutes into New Orleans. You can find a listing in the Good Sam site.

There are two State Park campgrounds near New Orleans that Suzan and I stay every year. As a matter of fact we are there now..Fairview Riverside is the one Suzan and I like. The other one is Fountain Blu. Fairview is in Madisonville, LA and Fountain Blue is in Mandeville, LA. They are located just across Lake Pontchartrain. Easy drive, and just far enough to be out of big city crime...and New Orleans has their share. Mandeville and Madisonville both have fabulous restaurants with the typical New Orleans flair. They both have WI-Fi (free) and their rates are only $16.00/$18.00.....Reservations would be strongly suggested...If you guys decide to stay at either..let me know and I'll give you some educated info on restaurants..

Doug/Judy and Larry /Suzan,

Thanks for the feedback. We ended up deciding to go for broke and stay at French Quarter RV Resort. Should be there late afternoon.

Larry, call me in the morning and we can chat about restaurants 574-333-1153.

Try the NO KOA it is a nice little place you can walk across the street to the river. Little park down the road. It is a short drive (if you do not get lost) to the city. We parked either at the casinos or hotel lots about $20 a day but were we splitting cost with another couple. Spent about a week there last summer.

Being from the area I have to 2nd the suggestion about the KOA in Kenner. Most of the 'French Quarter' camp grounds are in heavy industrial areas. I have serious security concerns about most of them and as a local wouldn't camp anywhere on the NOLA side of Ponchetrain except the Kenner KOA. There are some really nice places in Slidell and towards Hammond as well but those are a little further out and on the other side of the lake.

Thanks for all the ideas. We decided to stay downtown at French Quarter RV Park. Decent sized lot and walking distance to Bourbon Street. I'm parked right under an outdoor advertising sign. It's really high but the problem for me is my satellite dish can't see through it. No biggie - only here 2 nights and we're getting locals without even sending up the batwing. Good thing too - a storm is on the way. Don't want any antennas up in that :)Well, this is my first time "in" New Orleans. Only passed through it in the past. I have to say, we're having a nice time, but Bourbon Street at night is not for me. So far, we had a nice (and not too expensive) dinner at Remoulade, then some great live music and my first Beignets at Beignets at Cafe Beignet, then some great music and fun at Pat O'Brien's Piano Bar. Walked from the RV park but cabbed back home at 9pm.Got lots of area tips from Larry (wingfoot) and hope to meet Golden Betty for dinner Thursday.Jim

Well, after years of forum, email and chat room conversations, I finally met Golden Betty! Yep, Betty and Harry picked us up and took us out to dinner at one of their favorite restaurants. Great to finally meet Betty and her husband and get to know them a bit.

Nancy and I are hoping to spend a week in the New Orleans area in 2013 on our way to TX. Hope to spend more time with Betty and Harry and maybe meet even more Heartlanders too.

Thanks for the ideas for places to stay. We were there three years ago and stayed at Fountainbleau State Park and really liked it. It was close enough to all my friends that I was there visiting. I moved from there in 1991. Soon we will be spending more time on the road and hope to make it back there next year for a nice long visit.
