Axle Alignment due to tire wear?

Good morning,

We have a 2011 Big Horn 3610RE. Our tires are wearing excessive ONLY on the inside tread.

At first we suspected tire pressure, now bearings since mine had burnt and needed replacement.

I have always suspected that the axles are misaligned, especially since one of the spring hanger brackets recently failed.

Any suggestions about what is causing this wear would be helpful. Also what tires should I replace them with. BIG O has a BIG TRAC trailer tire. I keep hearing bad things about the SALUN tires that were installed at the factory.

Thanks

Tom

I went thru the same things you are describing with tire wear. After many attempted fixes I finally took the unit to a good trailer shop that had aligment equipment. My axle was way out of alignment and they cured the problem. Tires - I switched to Goodyear 614's and have been very happy with them. There is a lot of tire info on this forum you can find using the search function. They will give you a good idea of what other people are doing. Good luck fixing your problems and finding a tire you will be happy with.

All the best,

Certainly agree. Get the axles aligned then buy a set of 614's unless you intend to keep the unit for many years. Then it may be better to jump to 17.5 tires/wheels. Sure give you a lot less worry. Nothing wrong with the 614's either. We have ran them on stock trailers that haul more that a Cycloe weighs for many years with great results.

Tom, stay away from any "china bomb" tires. Get a set of the GY-G614's or Michlin's. BTW, what part of Mt are you in??

i keep hearing about a high failure rate of china tires and they can cause a great deal of trailer damage with a blowout. We are actually in Salt Lake City and soon going on to Seattle.

We have used Reico Titan Correct Track on both of our rigs to address the alignment problems. Our 08 3250 wore the inside on the front axle tires. After installing the Correct track we had no problems. We put the system on our new '12 3650 after having the alignment laser checked. The axles were 1/2" difference. I ordered the 3650 with the GY 614's.

Took the trailer to a shop in Salt Lake City called Alignment Specialists. They do motorhomes and trailers as well as big semi's. They were terrific and for 80 per axle it was well worth the investment. All my tires were going different directions. They reviewed a printout of the before and after specs and were quick and efficient. Highly recommend them if you are in Utah area.

We took our Landmark to a trailer shop yesterday in Wisconsin, and found out that even after having the 8k axles put on in June and then new tires, that the alignment was way off, and tech said that we would of been buying lots of tires. If it would not be for this forum and Heartland owners sharing their problems many would not know what is happening.

I really wonder how much of all the tire failure that people are having is due to improperly aligned axles.

If they are running hot or wearing uneven then it would certainly be a huge factor. Couple that with being loaded near the max and you will loose tread or blow a tire.
