We are planning to go to the gulf coast late april-early may. Would like to see New Orleans then drive east to Flordia. Prefer to camp on the coastal water or close to the beaches. I've read that you need to be careful oround New Orleans camping and touring. Any suggestions or tips will be greatly appreciated. Any favorite rv parks? Thanks for reading!

We are currently camped on the gulf at Cajun RV in Biloxi, MS. You can throw a rock and hit the beach from here. Excellent camping, excellent facilities.

As for things to do in the area all depends on your tastes and interests. There are 11 casinos in the area, complete with Las Vegas style shows, one of the few surviving light houses on the coast, the Maritime Museum, schooner rides, the Ohr-Okeefe Museum of Art, Ship Island, Ft Massachuetts National Park and the Gulf Island National Sea Shore. All with some of the best sea food and barbeque in the south!!!

Hope this helps!

Re: rv parks and to do on the gulf coast

StevenJ,
We live in Kenner, a suburb of New Orleans. We just passed through the KOA last night which is located in Kenner, on Jefferson Highway. We noticed some improvements taking place, i.e., new RV pads, and that is a good thing. It has been needing a "sprucing-up" for quite some time. There is the French Quarter RV Resort located in downtown New Orleans, very pricey, and Jim Beletti just stayed there with wife Nancy, so maybe he can give you his opinion of the accomodations overall. What I advise visitors to the area to do is to stay at Fairview-Riverside State Park which is located in Madisonville, LA, just across Lake Pontchatrain, 32 or so miles out of town. That is my humble opinion. I would be happy to advise you on what and what not to do around our beautiful city. Just drop me a line and we can exchange contact info.

Hi Betty! I owe you an email - doing that next :)

Steve, yes, as Betty said, we stayed at French Quarter RV Park in New Orleans. My comments are as follows:
- Expensive ($73/nt)
- Convenient to downtown
- Clean, Full Hookup, very nice sites

Would I stay there again? Yes. But I may also try that KOA in Kenner. Betty and another Heartlander tell me that state park is super. I'd rather be closer to downtown though - if I'm doing touristy stuff there.

When you get to Florida, you need to try St. George state park. It is on one of the outer Islands south of Tallahassee, Have a great trip.

If eligible you might check out the military campgrounds in the area. We stayed at the navy base in Gulfport last year and found it very nice although about an hour east of NO.

Ocean Springs, MS is a great place. The Gulf Islands National Park has a great campground with water and electricity. It an easy town to bike around. Also, check out Gulf Shores, AL. BTW we enjoyed our stay in the New Orleans KOA.

When you get to Florida we would suggest Emerald Beach RV resort in Navarre, Fl. It is about 10 miles east of Pensacola. We stayed there 10 days last year and are going back in May this year.

Good luck, travel safe.

I'm spending the winter at Island Retreat RV Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
This is not a bad Park, it's 1 1/2 miles West of Alabama Hwy 59 on Alabama Hwy 180 Fort Morgan Road.
You could also check out Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
This park is beautiful, with full hookups, swimming pool, etc.
Two (2) mile beach on the Gulf of Mexico.
Probably the nicest state park I have ever seen.

Gulf Shores, AL has a great rv park and also a state park that is very nice. As far a Pensacola, the Pensacola RV Park off RT 10 is family run and very clean. The owner is Wyndell and he is there all the time and will help with anyhting you need on your rig---

Destin Fl has some really nice RV parks and they are right on the beach. It will be hard to find nicer beaches than they have. Have a great trip!
