Subject: What to take to bed with you..........not a joke

Don't know if anyone has posted this before, but it is such a good idea I want to pass it on.

I got this in an e mail from a friend. Good idea at home or when you are in your travel trailer too! Safe travels and happy trails everyone!

Pretty neat idea. Never thought of it before.
Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.

This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage.

If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

P.S. I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is fantastic. Would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone. My Mom has suggested to my Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn't hear him..... He can activate the car alarm and then she'll know there's a problem.

Please pass this on even IF you've read it before. It's a reminder.

What an idea - and here I am paying all this time to ADT.

I've got ADT on every door and then some. If they don't hear that, they'll surely hear the racking of a 12-ga. and the .45. My 9mm is always in battery and close at hand. They can choose to ignore that warning at their peril.

I'm kinda like John only I don't have ADT. I have the no frills Smith and Wesson security system. No need for a car horn.

I'm all for owning guns and using them for protection, hunting, hobbies or anything this side of committing a crime. I'm sure it wouldn't be nearly as satifying as dropping the SOB thats breaking into your camper but this is a great idea for people that don't take their guns with them to camp at Jellystone and much better than a gun in the event of a medical emergency. Thanks for posting!

Great idea, thanks. As we are moving from our tent and sleeping bags to the comfort of a king size bed and private facilities, we have moved our portable marine signal horn into the coach. We are pretty sure all the neighbors will hear it!!

This is a great topic - I was actually thinking of installing a Air-Horn with remote on the Trailer for that exact reason -

Its nice when people attack other people for making a suggestion. This is supposed to be a friendly forum isn't it? Sorry TennesseeT even the moderator gets to take a shot at you with this post.

That is a very good idea. This will get the attention of everyone around and will more than likely run them off if not it will give you time to call for help if needed.

It was not my intent to take a shot at anyone. And we do try to keep this a friendly forum. That is just the security system that I use.
I do not think the car horn is something that is reliable. I hear them going off all the time and no one pays any attention to them. A false sense of security.
Others may have a differing opinion.

Since I fired the first volley of dissent, let me say that I agree with Dave 100%.

I think it's a good backup option, especially in an RV park situation and I keep my keys close at hand so I can add more noise to the mix in case of a immenent break-in attempt. If nothing else, the annoying car horn blasting may make any potential thief high tail it. That being said, I also use the JohnDar method, with ADT on every door and window, but I only have a Pump Action 20GA. The pump is very loud and I like to think the mix of 00Buck, Slug, and occasional #6 shot will provide any intruder with a bit of an artillery barrage.:p

It's a good option. When I hear an alarm going off I always look to see whats going on. The only way to truly stop crime is to observe and report it.
