best ways to attach shelf to headboard

What is the best way to attach a shelf to the headboard in the owners suite. I saw it once before as someones MOD but could not locate it. So what is the best way to attach a shelf to the headboard. thank you!!!!

Rick, I did it and it was not that hard to do. Here are some pix. The only issue would be is how the top of the headboard is shaped.

What method did you use to attach the shelf to the polysterene or what ever that faux wood product? Barn spikes, glue, silicone some special weird glue?
