Solar Oven

Has anyone tried cooking with a sun oven? It seems like an awesome unit for boon docking, or just off the grid cooking. Some really cool videos on YouTube that I have been watching. Just looking for someone with experience to say they like it,.and I will be pulling the trigger on one.

Never used one like you are talking about, but while I was working with the Boy Scouts, at some training I went to we made a solar oven. I wasn't impressed with it, I'll stick with a Dutch Oven!!!

That is a really pricey sun oven. You should search a bit more on the internet. I know there were a lot of low-cost and do-it-yourself kits being sold during the Y2K runup. Also, I'm pretty sure someone developed a very low-cost oven for use in 3rd world countries.

I'll take a $100 discount code anyday! I've been watching some of the recipes, and everything that people are making with them. I also have a dutch oven, but for boon docking this might be a cool thing to try.

Over $300 for a cardboard box seems high. You could make our own for a few dollars. It is just a cardboard box lined with aluminum foil and a rack in it to set things on.

Cardboard box ovens fueled by a few charcoal briquettes cook great! Amazing how well they bake...and no...the food doesn't taste smoky at all. I've used these ovens to bake biscuits for breakfast many times on Scout camping trips. Here's a link to a good description on how to make and use one.

The sun oven referred to is not made of cardboard, it's made of abs plastic, it should be black also not foil lined, adjustable so as to be perpendicular to the sun, glass cover sealed so heat dosen't escape, probably a few other things I'm missing ;)

I taught advanced camping skills to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in my ancient days...I used a reflector oven which appears to be a similar product but WAYYYYY cheaper. Once you are accustomed to heat produced and reflective quality of the unit, it was a snap. I would teach students how to make a lemon meringue pie in this oven , and believe me, if you can do that, you can cook anything in a reflector oven! I will google it and see what I come up with...there is an alternative...you can make your own!

In '56-'57 I worked for REI in the basement of the founder, Lloyd Anderson, makeing reflector ovens quite similar to the ones kayak2go is selling among other things. Made to go in front of a fire and worked very well. Some things never change!
