Use this thread to discuss with other attendees, Travel Routings to Goshen.

NOTE: ENETER AT GATE 1. This is NOT the gate we've entered in past years. This is the west-most gate. The road at that gate runs along the west edge of this venue.

Has anybody driven US-20 from I-69 over to the Goshen area? I'll be coming south down I-75 to US-127 and then I-69. Last time, I took 80/90 over to Middlebury, picking up IN-13 and then on down, but am considering avoiding the toll road this time. Just want to be sure there are no low hanging surprises.

I drove it last fall not a bad road but it was a little slow.

JohnDar,
20 is not a bad road at all as stated can get a little slow around Shipshewana and Middlebury but not terrible. Rt 15 off Rt 20 will take you in to Goshen although I have only been on 15 a few times. I am going to Elkhart tomorrow if not pressed for time I will take 15 into Goshen off 20 and let you know how that road is.

The toll road from Angola to South Bend road is rough pulling a camper in my opinion...plus had some minor construction spots going on last week plus cost almost $10 from Angola to Elkhart probably close to $8 if just going to Middlebury.

John, take a look at Hwy 12 from 69 at Coldwater. 12 west to 15 then south right into Goshen. It's been a while but we've been on 12 and it's pretty nice.

John,

15 into Goshen from 20 is only 6 miles other than being little bumpy typical Indiana rd there would be no problems with your rig.

Three of us Heartlanders are going to caravan from central WI through the U.P. and breaking up the trip into 3 travel days. Stops in Manistique, MI at Indian Lake Travel Resort and Manistee, MI. at Little River Casino RV park. Hopefully to win enough cash to pay for fuel. Yea, right...
Coming in on the 14th.

John,
When we left the rally two years ago we went up to the Lake Michigan shore. From where you are 131 goes mostly straight south and turns into Indiana 13 which will take you to 4 which goes right into Goshen. It is a pretty good road and we did not have any problems. Check it out on the map and see what you think. Also anyone coming US 20 from the east can also enter this way using Indiana 13 and 4, that is the way we travel as we only live 1/2 mile from 20 near the Indiana and Ohio line.

Question:
I am coming by I-80 from California to Elkhart first. What will my Indiana toll road toll be for my 4 axle rig? I looked at their website, got a price of about $15, but did not understand the "Barrier Charges".

Thanks! That's exactly what we were thinking of doing. Nice to get off the interstate and see a bit of the countryside. We're taking 2 days as this will be our longest trip - and the first such with a cat and dog along for the long ride. Taking 76 across PA to the OH Turnpike and thinking of getting off on 20 at the OH/IN line to 13 to 4. Stopping in Donegal, PA and Perrysburg, OH along the way.

As to 20 in indiana, I used it a couple of years ago in the evening, it was a pleasant ride, averaged about 50 mph and no toll

I don't know about the Barrier Charge, but have been on the Indiana I-80 toll a few times and you are correct, it will be around $15.
I take I-80 east to IN 15 at Bristol. Then south about 12 miles to Goshen.

Nancy and Dave--We are going a familiar route to us as we moved to Rusk, TX from IL and have been to Goshen from there before. We will take I30N out of Texarkana, I40 out of LittleRock to I55 at West Memphis. At Sikeston, Mo (where there is a good restruaunt, home of the Throwed Rolls) take I57 to I70 at Effingam IL. I70 to Indy to US 31N, then US6 to Nappanee and the at last 15N to Goshen. Like I said, we have done all this before and it is good road. We are leaving June 3 and plan to be in Goshen on the 6th. Nancy, I think this is the route we took in March, or pretty close. Very easy. Some construction on 40 in Arkansas, and around Effingham, but overall manageable. We are going through Tennessee and Kentucky for sightseeing so we'll see y'all on the 17th.

Bonnaroo is music and arts festival info below from their website.

WHAT IS BONNAROO?
4 of the best days ever. 80,000 happy campers. 700 Acres of Tennessee Nature. 150 epic performances. 10+ stages of music. Several dozen comedians. An escape into Excitement. Music. Art. Discoveries. Trees. Fresh Air. Green Grass. A mini film fest. Friends (Old / New). Adventure. Overwhelming happiness. Hugging a stranger by accident. Sharing and Generosity. Bonnaroovian Dancing. Hyperbolic verbiage. System overload. The perfect bite of ice cream. Sandals. Fallovers. Chirping Birds. Flashing Lights. Food and Drink. Variety. Singing. Laughing. Short shorts. High-Fives. Rocky IV in the cinema tent at 3am. Spicy Pie. Memories. Someone dressed up like Teen Wolf. Holy Cow(!) Moments. Interesting factoids. Egg sandwiches. More music. Adventure. Deep Breaths. Big smiles. This. That. The Other. Hellos and Goodbyes and reminders of all that we have to celebrate and look forward to next year and in the future.

Sir Paul McCartney is the lead-off singer this year. Record ticket sales. In the past, I-24 has had up to 20 miles wait as folks try to get in, some wait on the side of the interstate for a couple of days. I think TDOT has done a better crowd control job on the interstate the lasts couple of years. Just think of Woodstock and you have Bonnaroo.

Many of you are arriving to the campground in Goshen from different directions. I don't know all the main routes to the campground that everyone is using, but I hope this will help some.

From Elkhart or I-90 from the north or US-20 from the east or west this is a good route to follow toward the campground.

24587

If you are approaching from a direction that would take you through the downtown area it is easier to take the Truck route and avoid the few blocks of down town.

24586

As you approach the Fairgrounds Gate #1, which Mr. Beletti asking us to use to enter the campground, it will be the first gate from the West. Gate 1 is the main entrance to the Fairgrounds.
Also here is a Satellite view of the campground with the Gates Shown.

Gate #1 can be located at N41.58072 W85.81003...

Duane,

The SOITC (Suites Owners International Travel Club) aka, the DRV club is rallying at the venue at the same time we are pre-rallying. In order to stay out of their way AND to have our own check in area, Gate 1 was determined as a best-fit.

I'm looking forward to trying a new gate and such. Once you enter, it must be at least a quarter mile long road off 34 until you reach our check-in trailer. A long road to stack up the incoming, the onslaught, the HOCs.....

The gate 2 staging area seemed ideal, lots of room, and centrally located for the wagons to wagon wheel out to the sites.

We've come up I-35, I-30, I-40, and I-65 from Austin, Texas over the past few days (will be leaving Indy this morning). Traffic moved well with only a few relatively short areas under construction, and no delays. Road surfaces generally ok with a few rough patches. Highways around Nashville were probably the worst, but even there the rough area was only a couple of miles. And we managed to avoid severe weather.

LOTS of speed enforcement all along the way. I don't think I've ever seen so much.

Valerie, Yes it will be Sunday afternoon if not Sunday night. Worst case will be Monday morning. Wish we could leave earlier, but we are just happy to get to go and not miss it because of the mill shutdown.

Byrd, Thanks for the help, I have checked out Woods n Water CG and have it in the GPS , if we get an early start we will use this as our overnight, if it is a late start we will use a CG I found in Scottsburg. A really late start will be overnight in Cave City Ky.
I actually have 3 game plans and will be sitting like a hen on an egg for him to call and tell me when he will leave the mill. uggggggg

Kelly, We did not get to go to Gillette, but I did hit go and make sure of the addy. I have a note book and even printed out directions. I am a list making, back up plan planning worry wort. It's amazing how much you forget in just 2 years.
I feel sure I could call any Heartlander in my phone and they would all come running if we got lost and lead us in. That is what is so great about Heartlanders and that is why we love to rally.

Don't know exactly when you'll be driving through Sidney, Nebraska...but Colorado Chapter is having a campout at Cabela's June 13-16. If you're in the area maybe consider staying over for a night?
As far as weather goes you certainly need to stay aware! You may want to invest in a portable "weather radio". I carry a Midland HH 54VP2 while hiking in the back country and it certainly comes in handy. We also have a Midland WR300 in the RV, that has a battery back-up.

I am at the Elkhart campground, and pulled up the Goshen 4H fairgrounds from my nationwide campgrounds list downloaded from the POI factory. I tried to drive there in my truck on Saturday and went on a wild goose chase in Elkhart county. I got there on Sunday by inputting the address 1819 East Monroe Street Goshen, IN. from the fairground's website. A big landmark near the fairgrounds is the Goshen High School, whose football field end zone faces the road to the fairgrounds T intersection. There will be a lot of maneuvering through rural burgs from I-80 to get there.

Coming from the west another good route is follow 80 to 94 and take 94 to exit 40 which is US 2 and 20. Follow 2 to the 20 bypass around South Bend and just stay on 20 to whichever route you want to take to Goshen. This is 4 lane but not expressway and a pretty good road. It's a lot cheaper(free) than the toll road which is pretty expensive when towing a 2 axle trailer.

30 from Schereville is 4 lane hwy decent road a few stoplights thru some of the towns but not bad. 15 from Warsaw to Goshen 2 lane but good road. I was on 30 between Ft Wayne and Plymouth last week no issues.

I would skip HWY 30 from Joliet to Merrillville unless you like shopping areas, narrowing roads, and stop and go traffic. I-80 to I-94 is a good route.
