Escape the August heat?

We are looking to take a week in August to escape the N Texas heat and want to find something in a day's drive with some cooler temps. I was thinking Arkansas/Ozarks but looking at weather.com it doesn't look much cooler. So now we are open to suggestions. :)

We enjoy Ruidoso, NM. Closest mountains and significantly cooler. About a 10 hour drive from Dallas, very easy drive as not a lot of big towns to navigate. I-20 east to just past Sweetwater, then up 84 to Post, then 380 to Roswell and 70 to Ruidoso.

The hardest part is through the foothills of the Hondo valley between Roswell and Ruidoso, but so worth the drive! Highs in the mid 80s. Lots to do and see.

We stayed at the Circle B RV Park, across from Ruidoso Downs. Easy to get into pull-through sites, and they have a good little RV parts store.

Anyplace in the Rocky Mtns will be cooler. The higher in elevation and further north, the cooler the temp. The lower humidity will also help you feel cooler. We see many TX tags on vehicles in NM and CO in the summer.

We spent last summer at the Mountain View at Rivers Edge Resort in Creede Colorado. It's at 8800 ft. elevation and has some good fishing in the Rio Grande (with license) or fishing in the park's pond where you pay for what you catch. It's a beautiful place.

Thanks everyone. We spent last August in Durango, CO in a NP just north of town. Absolutely beautiful. I was hoping to do something a little closer this year but as you have pointed out the higher the better. I think we may look at Ruidoso, NM.

+1 on Ruidoso. It is an oasis in the desert. Went there a couple times each summer with my parents. I love going to Ruidoso Downs, and sitting outside watching the horses run in that cool crisp mountain air. Cloudcroft is very nice too and a lot quieter.

Durango is our favorite place, Winter or Summer. But Ruidoso is closer, and similar climate. Durango is a little bigger, and more touristy, but Ruidoso has some nice shopping in mid-town, plus the racetrack and casino. Cloudcroft is really nice too. One trip we stayed in Ruidoso and did a day trip to Cloudcroft, another day trip to White Sands National Monument and Valley of Fire Recreational Area. Lots to see and do within driving distance.
