would there be interest in having a tour organized to visit one of the John Deere factories? Those of us that went to the
JD tractor factory had a good time. There are tours of tractors, combines, engines or ag equipment such as cotton pickers at the different plants in iowa.

David,

I thought the Deere tour was GREAT! I'll bet others will want to do it. As it's a half-day sort of thing with commute time - this might even be a pre-rally item, say Wednesday - week of the rally.

Anyone considering this rally, if tractors and factory tours interest you - strongly consider indicating your your desire for this tour.

Bob and Pat, looking forward to seeing you again in Amana.

David that sounds like a great idea. Let's do it!

It may be possible to do back to back tours of both the tractor and engine works. Both are located in waterloo.

Would there be interest in having a golf outing at the Amana golf course located just a few miles from the amana rv park?

Ok, Jay, pencil us in as Peggy wants a little more diversity . . . it is going to be tight getting back to Texas for the Bullard rally, but I think we can do it. I don't know the dates yet, but will probably arrive the 27th and depart on the 5th. Mike

I'm sorry for the confusion on the dates. I reserved the sites for the entire week, including the rally hall. We will be using the hall that is next to the office this time. If you want to come in and stay all week and explore the area, including the John Deere factory tour that will be great. The actual rally dates are the Oktoberfest weekend, October 3-5th.

Bernie and Judi and Peg and Mike, I'll add you to the list.

Your Central Region Rally planning team has been hard at work, planning the first Central Region rally.

During today's planning meeting, we created a draft rally agenda. If you're already signed up for this rally - thank you! If you're considering signing up for this rally and need to first know what "the plan" is, please take a look at post number 1 of this rally thread for details. Here's a handy link to it (//heartlandowners.org/showthread.php/42626-EVENT-Heartland-Regional-Rally-IA-Amana-10-3-2014-to-10-5-2014?p=334749&viewfull=1#post334749).

If you've never visited the Amana Colonies area of Iowa, now is your chance. Sign up for the rally today and come for the entire pre-rally and explore Iowa!

Jay........great meeting you at the Luddington rally. You reminded us to sign up for the Amana rally, and we just did!!!!
Claudia will be returnning to her "roots" in Iowa. We will be there for the pre-rally as well. According to Laura, some sites are pull-thru or back-in, depending who pulls in first. No problem.....plenty of room to back in and swing around.
Nice part about traveling through Iowa is a stop in the small town of Marengo,(just down the road from Amana), to get our knives resharpened again. For the folks that don't know, when you buy a beautiful handmade knife in the Amana store, you can get it resharpned free forever if you stop by in their small shop in Marengo. See you soon!!!!!!

If there is interest, I can arrange a John Deere tour. John Deere Tractor works and Engine works are located in Waterloo, IA. Last year, we took a tour of the Tractor plant. The tour should probably be on Wednesday. http://www.deere.com/wps/dcom/en_US/corporate/our_company/fans_visitors/tours_attractions/factorytours.page?
The Engine works also offers tours.

Most likely, It would be a 10 AM tour unless people are interested in getting the 8 AM tour. Tours are 1.5 hours. It takes about 1 hr 15 min to drive to Waterloo from the Amanas
Let me know if your interested and the time your interested.

There are several golf courses nearby.
The closest being the Amana Colonies Golf Course. Not exactly cheap but very nice.
Two others are: a 9 hole course over near Marengo.

We might have some potential Heartland buyers (S.O.B's) that would like to join us at the rally. What festivities will they be "permitted" to join in on ??? We'd like to show them what the "Heartland family" is all about, especially at a rally.

jbeletti
09-20-2014, 12:17 AM
Hi Jim,

Great question, thanks for asking. I'll take it on. This reply is for you but also for anyone curious.

The primary activity of the Heartland Owners Club is putting on rallies. There are 3 main types:
1. Chapter Rallies
2. Regional Rallies
3. National Rallies (US+Canada)

We're okay (with Chapter Leader approval) with SOBs coming to Chapter Rallies so long as:
1. By allowing them to attend, no Heartland owners is being held from attending
2. They pay the rally fee (usually $20)
3. SOB rig count is kept under 20% of total rig count

We generally prefer to have only Heartland owners attending Regional and National Rallies. Minor exceptions have been made and the scenario you describe is one that has come up in the past. An owner of another brand is interested in possibly buying a Heartland and wants to "hang out" with real owners to get the low down and sort of check us and the product out.

In cases where I personally have made an exception, I allowed an SOB or non-RV owner to check us out but not attend anything I had to pay for or was otherwise sponsored.

In the case of a Regional Rally, using the Central Region Rally as an example, the club (i.e. my budget) covers costs for:
- Rally T-Shirts
- Door Prizes
- Tickets to Oktoberfest
- Dinner at the Ronneburg
- Breakfast
- Dealer provided meals
- Other things I'm not remembering past midnight tonight :)

The club has budgeted and will likely spend about $120 per rig for the rally. Heartland covers this cost. For this reason, we try to hold Region and National rallies for Heartland owners/club members.

This all said, we know when SOBs hang out with us, that we infect them with Heartland spirit and they end up wanting to be a part of that. I'm okay with your SOB/Heartland wannabes staying at the same campground to hang out with us at all informal activities. Should they wish to have fun at Oktoberfest, they can buy tickets on their own at the campground office. Should they wish to join us at the Ronneburg, they may be seated with you, but order and pay separately (we have a negotiated discounted rate for our group). We would not receive a Rally Bag, T-Shirts, Door Prize Tickets etc.

Tell them to make their reservations and we'll work out other details when we meet them and rally attendees give them their pre-Heartland initiation :)

Thanks again for asking Jim - great question.

jimpav
09-20-2014, 08:18 AM
Thanks Jim.......that was a superlative explanation not only to my question about SOB's, but also the factory commitment.
It also goes with out saying, the commitment of the club president (you) and all the local and regional chapter leaders that spend countless (non-paid) hours organizing a memorable experience for the club members.
It's perfectly understandable the reasons to balance SOB participation at rallies while trying to welcome prospective Heartland owners into a wonderful organization. It's also important to realize what goes into making a rally as far as cost and volunteer time instead of just showing up and taking things for granted. Looking forward to another GREAT rally!!!!

I have no problem with SOB's coming to our rallies. The thing that aggravates the holly molly out of me is when the same ones come over and over. If you want to hang out at our rallies so bad that you come over and over, then by a Heartland. And that's my opinion.

The Engine plant tour has been canceled due to plant shutdown during Sept 29th - Oct 3. If you're interested, I am going to contact JD in the morning to see if the Combine factory tour in Moline is being held. The Combine tour could also include stops at the John Deer world Headquarters and John Deere Pavillion where numerous pieces of equipment are on display include several concept vehicles.

Nancy and I were invited over to Dave (cookie) and Mary H's (Mrs Cookie) for happy hour. Jay C and David L stopped by too and we hatched a plan to stuff rally bags tomorrow.

Around 5 pm, nine of us caravanned south on 151 to I-80 to have Maid-Rites! Yummy! After dinner, Bernie, Dave H, Bill L and I walked around to cap and deploy some Munzees.

Had a great Central Region pre-rally day here in Amana, Iowa.
This morning, a couple of the guys played golf while another group of guys played bocce ball.
Later, a few people went over to the rally hall and sorted and folded all the rally t-shirts. Thanks guys! Then a group of us went over and organized all the rally bag contents, stuffed all the bags and audited them. Great work team!...

Had a nice campfire tonight. About 25 people there. One Heartlander made campfire popcorn and another passed the Fireball. Nice time with great friends.

While a bunch of the pre-rally attendees went on the John Deere plant tour, I smoked some beef and some peppers and made a double batch of chili. Looking at the forecast, it ought to go over well :)
32198
Meat, peppers and onions simmering

Later, Dave H (cookie) and I crawled under my RV to see why I was leaking brake fluid. Seems I must have bottomed out the suspension such that a U-bolt flattened a section of brake line that was fastened to the bottom of the I-beam frame. The contact not only flattened the line but fractured it - hence the drip. At least now I know. We'll make a repair later this week.
32199
Look at the flat spot to the right. Ouch!

Then Terry H came by to help me figure out why my residential refer has slid forward an inch. Got that figured out and made a permanent fix to that.
32200 32207

Nancy and I went downtown Amana for a bit more shopping.

Then we met a group of 10 more Heartlanders at the Ronneburg for dinner. It was good!
32202 32203 32204 32205 32206

After dinner, probably 30 of us gathered for a campfire over at Jay and Stella's. I enjoyed walking around to meet everyone, learn more names and find out where everyone was coming in from. We have a LOT of states represented. Another rally attendee came in after dark. I helped guide them into their campsite. More people - more fun!

Another great pre-rally day :)

Well, I hope the weather there is better than it is here in Drayton, ND. Woke up to 36 degrees & gusty winds. The rig was bouncing all night from the wind. They are talking about possibly a 1" accumulation of snow today or overnight. Weather for the next few days will be cold, dropping to below freezing overnight.

Thursday

Today was the first official day of the rally. Much of the usual activity was seen around the campground in the morning. People walking their dogs, a group of guys playing bocce ball...

Bernie and I went on a "man-run" to Cedar Rapids today, stopping at Menards, Harbor Freight, O'Reilly's Auto Parts and Walmart. We did a bit of Munzing too.

Back at the campground in the afternoon, we had a "Meet and Greet" in the afternoon in the rally hall. Attendees brought snacks and visited with each other. Rally leaders walked through the rally agenda and took questions.

In the evening, we had a potluck dinner in the rally hall. Tons of great food!

Brrrrr....

It was cold this morning and we had a really windy night. The wind continued to blow all morning as well. During a lull in the wind, I took down my EZUp with the help of Bill L and Dave H. It’s supposed to turn colder starting tonight and stay that way, so I figured it best to take it down now will temps are still in the 50s.

A lot of people went downtown Amana today to exchange their Oktoberfest tickets for wrist bands, take in the local sights and shops. Nancy and I stopped by the Amana Meat Shop to use our wooden nickel for a $1 pack of brats. Of course we bought way more than that :)
32238 32239

We went to Grape Vine Antiques next door as well.
32240 32241 32242

We found street parking a block from the Festival Hall and walked over to exchange our Oktoberfest tickets for wrist bands.
32244 32243

Once inside the festival, we had lunch. We both had grilled pork tenderloin sandwiches, German potato salad and Oktoberfest beer from the local Millstream Brewery.
32245

After lunch, we headed into the barn where the music was roaring. We were joined over the course of the afternoon by a couple dozen Heartlanders. A lot of fun!
32246 32247 32248 32249 32250 32251 32252

In the evening, we gathered back at the rally hall for a dealer sponsored Brat dinner with attendees providing sides and desserts. Thank you Kettlesen RV - you’re a real friend to our club and we appreciate your sponsorship of tonight’s dinner.
32253 32254 32255 32256 32257 32258 32259 32260 32261

I've never heard that term (TIA), but I am familiar with having a stroke as I had one four years ago this month (October 22, 2010) at the age of 50.

I have to say that I've had much better days than that day.

Bernie, we don't know how long we'll be up here. If the weather cooperates, the harvest usually lasts 2 weeks. It officially started on Oct. 1, but they've been bringing in beets for around 2 weeks. Emme and I got to say goodbye to several attendees this morning before they rolled out. By the time Nancy and I got all our stuff done, ready to head out, it was about 10:30 am. Said goodbye to the two couples from CO and we were on our way.

I want to give a big shout-out to our rally planners:
- Jay and Stella Coffman
- Dan and Karen Halvorsen
- Dave and Shel Lippe

For each of them, this was the first Heartland Regional Rally they planned and executed. I enjoyed mentoring them and working along side them. Thank you rally team.

Thanks also to all who jumped right in to help cook, serve, setup, clean-up etc.

Finally, thank you to 42 couples from 12 states that made this rally the success that it was. I hope you had as much fun at the rally and in and around the Amana area as Nancy and I did.

And a surprise for me today... My boss forwarded a voice mail to me that was left by rally attendee Roy Hiebner (NE). Roy wanted to let Heartland know the he and Brenda had a fabulous time. Thank you Roy for taking the time to make a heartfelt call like that.

Heartland is not perfect, nor are we as your club leaders. But we try very hard to make a great RV and we've tried hard to build a great club and online community that really supports our product owners. We appreciate you!

Well add Marti and Me to the list of people that thought the rally was great. We had a great time meeting all of the folks from the U.P. down to Arkansas. To the plannersJay and Stella and their team we say great job, but next time please plan a little warmer weather for these folks with thin blood.

To all the folks we did not get to say good bye to, I'm sorry we missed you. We wished we could have stayed longer. Our first stop was scheduled for Peculiar, Mo. but the weather was good and we were making good time so we went on to Carthage, a long day but the weather was warm. Beautiful country, we'll be back. After that, on to home. Safe travels to all, we will meet again.:):o

We've been experiencing warmer temperatures since leaving Amana on Sunday. We didn't have to use the a/c in Missouri but did in Oklahoma, where we are now. We'll be back in Texas today and it will be good to be back. We've missed our home state but have had a great summer, traveling the rally circuit in the Central Region and have made many new friends.

We want to thank all of the attendees of the Amana Regional rally. We hope you had a good time and even though we were tired, it was worth it!
