What Is This Vent Cover For?

Why is there a "vent" over the pantry? The only thing behind it is access to the sliding door hardware, top of the pantry, and it looks like a direct opening from the wall to the floor. Why not make it storage, use a false cover, or extend the pantry? I don't understand it because the "vent" looks purposely made. I remember when I asked the RV sales man and he said it was the A/C return vent...if you can believe that.

It's not the A/C return vent but I think it is the furnace return vent. We also have one on our 2011 Rushmore.

Yep, furnace return vent. Ours is above the cabinet, not in it. Although the furnace draws a lot of air from the basement, it has to have some place to get out of the room/area it's being pushed into. Otherwise, you'd be pressurizing the space.
