Does water pump run if no water?

We are hooked into city water all summer. Have not used fresh water tank since we sanitized our lines in April. My wife accidentally turned on the water pump and left on for 15 seconds and we had no water in the tank. I just tried it now by turning on and it made no sound. Is pump shot? We will need if few weeks to winterize.

Thanks for for your advise!

Normally, Nothing to worry about. For peace if mind put some water in tank and switch to pump. It should work just right. It should not burn out in that short of time.

If you were hooked to city water and had the city water turned on your system would be pressurized and the water pump most likely would not come on because of the pressure cutoff switch at the pump. Turn city water off and open a faucet and turn pump on and try it.

The water pumps are designed to run dry and not get damaged. Mine have ran for hours at a time and were not damaged.
