How Comfortable is Air Mattress/Frame For Large People?

Hi: My BH is on order, and we're trying to plan our sleeping arrangements. We have a toddler who still wants to sleep with Mom (I know..)! Plus they often go to bed much earlier than I do. To avoid awakening them and fighting for space, pooch and I may just sleep on the Hide-A-Bed.

My question: is the standard air mattress "beefy" enough to hold a 280 lb guy (without that "metal rail/spring in the back" feeling many hide-a-beds have)? Or should I plan to add some topper to it, or else add a thin sheet of vinyl, etc. between the mattress and frame to eliminate that metal feeling in my back?

Since we have a 1-week trip planned for right after delivery, I wanted to get any extra materials now so we can be comfortable.

Thanks!
Gary

My son and fiancee use the air mattress whenever they stay with us. Together I'm sure they weigh over 300 lbs...they love it. The mattress is almost 8" thick, you're not gonna feel any bars, frame or whatever!
