Diamond plate on front of trailer

Has anyone replaced the diamond plate on the front of their trailer? We just purchased a 2010 North Trail M-22FDS and the diamond plate seems to be a plastic material and not metal.

Our 2011 NT has the sae plastic diamond plate. I think it is just there as an added layer of protection on the front from rocks from the tires. Not sure I would want to put a true metal plate there due to the weight.

A long time ago I bought a 4x8 sheet of aluminum diamond plate. It was about 1/16th thin but it would work good for the front of a trailer which is what I bought if for. I never installed it but I doubt that the whole sheet weighed 5 pounds.
