The Rally Facility

Hook up your rig and grab your lederhosen, head south on I-19 from Tucson to Amado, AZ for The Arizona Chapter’s Oktoberfest 2018 at De Anza RV Resort. For the Saturday potluck, what sounds better than brats and beer to start the celebration? We supply the brats and you bring your favorite beverage. For reservations call De Anza RV Resort (520) 398-8628 or (888) 398-8628 and tell them you are with the Heartland Owners Club rally, provide them with your credit card info for a deposit. We have a hold on 20 sites so start making your reservations now, but no later than August 1, 2018. All sites are full hookup including cable TV. Sites will be assigned by the park staff when you register with De Anza RV Resort on arrival. If we have more than 19 rigs site cost will be $28.80. The resort says that they can give us more sites beyond the 20 blocked if needed.

Please be sure to post or PM me after making your reservation with your dates, HOC # and number attending.

The Area

Amado, AZ is an area rich in history with many interesting sites to visit. You will find visitor information in your registration packets. Explore and have fun.
If you are in to shopping, just south of Amado is the historical and arts community of Tubac with many shops to explore. Tubac is also home of the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. Further south a few miles is Tumacacori Mission a National Historic Park giving you a glimpse into life here in the 1700s. The Santa Cruz Spice Company store nearby sells a vast array of spices, rubs, seasonings and gifts. You won’t be disappointed. To the east is Whipple Observatory visitor center. In Green Valley you can visit the Titan Missile Museum and further north is the Mission San Xavier del Bac a Catholic Mission dating from the 1700’s and still in use today. A birder’s paradise, Madera Canyon in the Santa Rita mountains, is nearby with plenty of hiking trails. Desert Diamond Casino is also only a short drive north of Green Valley off I-19. Lots more to see and do in the area and we’ll have more info coming soon.

* * * Late Updates * * *

GAMES NIGHT:

During the games night we will have a game called Derby Dice. Derby Dice is played with dice and a roll of dimes. Bob our De Anza host will run the game. We will need to play in couples otherwise the game could run on for a long time. You might walk away with all the dimes in play. We will have a few (9) rolls of dimes available for those who might not have the dimes.

What to bring: a $5.00 roll of dimes and your beverage of choice and be ready to have a great time.

BUFFET BREAKFAST:

After reviewing our budget for this rally we have a few extra $'s, so the chapter is going to cover the sales tax and gratuity for the Saturday breakfast. The cost for each plate will be $10.00. Payment for breakfast will be collected at registration.

A new addition to the rally schedule:
On Friday 10/12 from 8:00 am until 3:30 pm La Mesa RV from Tucson will display 3 Heartland coaches. In the morning La Mesa will provide coffee and pastry for our rally and all park residents and in the afternoon hours ice cream will be served as well.

OBSERVATORY TOUR:

Great news – the observatory tour is on and it’s free. We have been working on a firm commitment by the observatory to provide a tour of the mountain top facility. The holdup has been due to construction and maintenance on the road to the summit. The construction is not complete all the way to the top so we will only be able to tour the ridge top facilities which still offer spectacular views. This will be a shorter tour of approx. 3 1/2 hours so the bus will return us to the base camp and visitor center at around 12:30 PM. There is a picnic area at the base camp if you wish to bring a sack lunch after the tour. The visitor center at base camp offers interpretive displays and a small gift shop. The volunteers in the visitor center will answer your questions and offer their knowledge of the entire complex. We have had several cancellations which have opened 12 seats on the bus to the observatory. If you wish to go on this excursion please let me know and I will add you to the tour.

The weather is not looking real good on Friday. We are trying to contact the observatory to see how we could be affected.

Please plan on carpooling due to limited parking at base camp.

Rose and I drove to De Anza today to make our reservation and ask about early arrivals and late departures and also get clarification on Credit Card info.

Rally rates apply for early arrivals and late departures and the resort is really excited about the number of attendees that have registered so far.

When a reservation is made your credit card is not charged until your arrival and registration with De Anza RV Resort.

A change to the agenda. Jim Beletti has offered to cook scrambled eggs on Sunday morning 10/14, so I have added a potluck breakfast for Sunday morning. If you wish, bring a side dish or just plan on coming for a meal to get you going for the drive home if you are leaving that day. This would be a great time for hugs and to say your goodbyes. Thank you Jim!

Up to 14 rigs for the Oct 2018 rally. It seems we are doing well with registrations, I am hoping we exceed 20 rigs - more rigs more fun! The last I talked with the park they were amazed at the number of rigs registered so far in just two weeks time.

I have just added this activity to the Friday agenda.

UPDATE TO THE FRIDAY AGENDA: We are arranging a tour of the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory on top of the 8,550 ft Mt. Hopkins in The Santa Rita Mountains just east of the rally site. This tour would be on Friday 10/12/2018 starting at 9:00 AM and returns at around 3:00 PM. The tour bus accommodates 30 persons on a 10 mile drive to the mountain top facility. The view is spectacular! The cost is normally $10.00 per person however when we talked to the tour coordinator she said the cost would be waived. (We are not quite sure about that, so bottom line is it may cost $10.00 per person.) We will not have all of this firmed up until late July or early August but in the mean time we would like to know who and how many would like to take part in this activity. Please make a post in this thread with name and number of persons and I will add to the tour list. Once tour details are firmed up I will contact all who have signed up on the tour to confirm your reservation.

For info on the observatory click on this link https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/flwo

Don't hesitate to get on the list we only have 30 seats.

Another addition to the agenda this time for Saturday. We have arranged a no host breakfast at the famous Cow Palace Restaurant just across the freeway in Amado. Great atmosphere and some real tasty eats. The palace opens at 8:00AM and we have reserved the banquet room with seating for up to 100, so we will have plenty of room to enjoy a wonderful meal. Click this link to learn more about the Cow Palace http://www.thecowpalace.com/. We will be ordering from the menu which has the usual breakfast offerings.

An update to the Saturday breakfast at the Cow Palace Restaurant:

Rather than ordering from the menu, which would be very slow, we have arrange a buffet style service. The menu is below, the cost is $10.00 plus tax and gratuity. Service starts at 9 AM.

Scrambled eggs
Breakfast meats
Home fries
Biscuits and Gravy (homemade biscuits)
Cut up fresh fruit
Coffee Station

So far we have 31 signed up for the breakfast and we have room for more, so get your name on the list. Don’t miss out on the good food and the atmosphere at this famous restaurant!!

This is a quick list of some places of interest in The Amado AZ area. Old Tucson and Pima Air & Space Museum are the furthest away and require most of a day to enjoy. I am very partial to Pima Air & Space Museum because an aircraft that I spent many flying hours on is there. More info on those and other sites to see will be included in the swag bags given at check in. In addition there are several golf courses in the area. We are looking forward to a fun AZ Chapter rally, hope to see more HOC members sign up.

If you will scroll to the bottom of the rally thread you will see who is registered and the arrival and departure dates for everyone. When you have settled on dates call the park and tell them you are with the Heartland Owners Club. They will ask for your CC info to hold your reservation (your card will not be charged until you check in to the park). Once registered make a post to the rally thread to give me the dates as well as if you two wish to go on the observatory tour and/or the breakfast at The Cow Palace restaurant. You could commit to the Amado rally and cancel before the cutoff date, that would get you out of any costs. Just call the park, they will ask for your card to hold the site. Your card will not be charged if you cancel before the cut off. 30 sites gets us a great rate.

If you do reserve a site for the rally let me know so I can up date the list.

I carry all of this stuff but we're rolling out after I drop the eggs off and we eat as we need to push back home for a quick turn. Anyway, by cooking is other peoples stuff, I don't have to spend time back at my RV cleaning up and stowing. Thanks!

yep- non stick. And I’m happy to do your schlepping for you😉. Let me know if you need anything else as Amado is only 45 miles from home (10miles from work).. looking forward to seeing you both again and catching up

Jim, don't worry about cooking other peoples stuff and cleaning up. I am trained in schlepping (Monday burger night at the local Legion) and I am sure others in addition to Ann and I will join in as well.

Looking forward to seeing you guys again.

Sadly, we (John & Debi Mac Vie) need to cancel our reservations for this wonderful rally. We see so many friends on the list and we will miss every one of you! We really wanted to attend! But...it’s for a happy reason...daughter is having her first baby. She’s in South Carolina so we’ll be headed back there. We’ll look forward to seeing pictures and hearing about all the fun everyone has at this rally!

With a new cancellation the Finney's have been moved up from the standby list to seats on the bus for observatory tour.

We have had three cancellations for the rally - so if anyone would like to attend, get in touch with De Anaz RV Resort to see if you might be able to get a site reservation with them (the site cost may not be at the rally rate). We would love to have you.

On Sunday night 9/2 the Amado area received between 5 and 9 inches of rain resulting in what is now referred to a 500 year flood. Our rally venue is untouched however The Cow Palace received severe water damage. A 4 to 5 foot wall of water entered the backdoor of The Cow Palace destroyed the kitchen and traveled though the dinning area then busted out the front doors. Needles to say our planned breakfast was not going to happen at The Cow Palace.

Rose and I have contacted our rally venue, De Anza RV Resort and asked for help. Bob and Amy have stepped up and offered to open the restaurant at the park and put our breakfast buffet on for us.

We don't have a lot of details worked out yet but in the next few days we will make a post to this thread with more information. The menu might change some and the price could change as well but we are sure Bob and Amy will do a great job for us.

We have have had a late cancellation, so that opened up a pair of seats on the observatory tour. Next in line on the stand by list are the Arganbrights to fill those 2 open seats.

We have had another cancelation so two more seats have opened up on the observatory tour. Bill & Linda Memmer have been moved off of the stand by list and have seats on the bus to the observatory and we have one open seat remaining. The standy by list is cleared.

Please plan on carpooling due to limited parking at base camp.

We still have 5 open seats for this event - lets fill up the bus. Send me a PM, make a post or email me soon.

The Saturday breakfast buffet will be served in the restaurant at De Anza. The price for the meal is $10.00 + tax and gratuity for a total $12.50 per plate. The chapter will be paying the resort with one check so we will be collecting payment for the meals at rally registration. Rose and I have eaten in the restaurant at De Anza many times and have never had a bad meal.

After reviewing our budget for this rally we have a few extra $'s, so the chapter is going to cover the sales tax and gratuity for the Saturday breakfast. The cost for each plate will be $10.00.

During the games night we will have a game called Derby Dice. Derby Dice is played with dice and a roll of dimes. Bob our De Anza host will run the game. We will need to play in couples otherwise the game could run on for a long time. You might walk away with all the dimes in play.

What to bring: a $5.00 roll of dimes and your beverage of choice and be ready to have a great time.

Lynne and Rose - Nancy and I had a great time at your first rally. We enjoyed seeing our friends as well as making a few new ones with the first-timers.

Pretty sure we won't make next year's AZ rally but so glad we were able to make the trip this year!

Lynn & Rose:
What a nice Rally you put on and the venue could not have been any better! Super JOB!
You are to be congratulated for all the hard work and organization you had for your "First" Rally.
Your leadership in your past "job" life really shined through into your Rally planning!
There are four RV's left for the last post Rally night and we leave in the morning. Meanwhile, we are running down to the hospital in Green Valley and having our jaws wired shut to prevent any more weight gain from all the food.
Can't wait for your 2019 Rally at Distant Drums, another super Venue!
Thank you for your excellent leadership.
