The screws holding the base plate on my basement door keeps pulling out. since the door is so think, you can't do very much. I'm thinking I need to mount a larger footprint plate and then mount the lift plate to it?? anyone had this problem, have a fix I can use??

Tim, get a piece of aluminum plate about 4x6x about an eight and glue and screw it to your door. Then attach the shock.
I have seen this problem before and that or a piece of plywood was the fix. I like the aluminum best.

Those cylinder put a tremendous amount of force on the hinges anyway. I removed my HP gas shocks on my cargo doors, and installed the magnet latches. Its cheap and will never wear out, or break. Holds the door up.

I used the aluminum patch as described by cookie, works great and have had no issues.
Just be careful not to use to long of screws when installing. I used self tapers, really easy.I installed this on my front cargo door as well.
