Full time state declaration

We will be going full time around the first of the year and have questions about how to claim a different state as place of residency. We have heard that South Dakota is a good state for this, because of no state tax. Can someone explain the benefits other than no state tax. Also how does a person get all this set up, vehicle registrations and so on, What are the benefits of doing this? We really appreciate any help in this matter.

Been SD residents since 2005 when we went full time. Other than no state income tax, they had no inspections, no estate taxes, you only need to spend one night to claim residency, etc. If you are going to need to get health insurance be aware they don't have any plans that will travel with you.

Insurance used to be the cheapest, but no any more. You can contact any mailing service and most will help you set up residency...you will have to go there in order to obtain a SD driver's license....

Setting up "domicile" includes a number of issues:

  • The address used when filing taxes
  • The address used to register vehicles
  • The address used for voting
  • The address used for financial services

Popular states include South Dakota, Texas, and Florida. None have state income tax. All three have a choice of commercial mail services.

Escapees in Livingston, TX can guide you through the process of establishing domicile. If you contact them in advance and bring with you the information and documents that are necessary, it is a relatively painless and quick process. While we were full timing as Escapees, we used their assigned mailing address for all of the above purposes and had mail forwarding service as well. The local library issued us a card which allowed access to their digital content by our Kindle reader.

One downside of Texas is the vehicle inspection laws. The truck and trailer need an annual inspection in order to renew tags. If out of the county, you can still renew online, but once back in Texas you have only a couple of days to get to your home county and get the inspections done.

Regardless of state chosen, you should check with Escapees for information. They operate in South Dakota, Texas and Florida. Here's a link to their Domicile page.

It's important to thoroughly establish domicile. Some states are not in a healthy financial condition and are working hard to prevent people from picking up and leaving their tax rolls. Even if you leave, they may still want you to pay taxes and are willing to fight over it.

Check with America's Mailbox in Box Elder S.D. next to Rapid City. They have done an excellent job for us. FYI, Eastern S.D. has a "wheel tax" for some RV's, Western S.D. does not. Something else to check into. Good Luck in your search and your full timing adventures.
