Shurflo Extreme Series Pump Strainer

Our Cyclone came with the wrong water pump inlet strainer. According to Shurflo, the series 254 High Flow strainer should be used. We have the series 255.

I was wondering if this was as designed or just an install error?
Since my unit is out of warranty, can I still return the old strainer for the correct one?

Series 255 is for the Classic pumps.
Series 254 is for the Extreme pumps.
