Yes, The owners packet comes with a cord to help raise and lower the awing, but you must also loosen one screw in order to release the unit from the gear drive, and then re-tighten it to hold the awing in place. The instructions should be in the awing manual.

I don't know if the extra weight would put strain on the motor causing the motor to fail prematurely. I know if it was me, I would just remove the shade to be sure. My manual says to loosen the screw to manually roll up the awning if the motor fails and then have it serviced. That leads me to believe it is not designed to be manually rolled up.
