let the first person who never regrets something they did be the first to slam this guy. He has accepted responsibility and apologized. I see it as a closed matter

I'm sorry, this is no 12 year old on a camping trip carrying his first pocket knife looking to carve his inirials into something. This is a married adult with children, who owns a business in the "recreation" industry. I think when you are an adult, you should have enough common sense, to know that something like his actions is just wrong. If i had an order in for an Anderson hitch, i would be cancelling my order.

He can apologize all he wants, the initials and heart aren't going anywhere!

I don't have much respect for those who vandalize anything, especially nature. That said we should also consider that he is not the first one who allowed his love for someone to cloud his common sense and better judgement. Should he be punished for his actions? Certainly. He is an adult who set a bad example for his children, among others. Should he be punished the rest of his life for it? No. Does he need to apologize for it? By all means. He did that and we have to assume that he is sincere about that. What we read into his apology is our personal take on his statement. We can only guess whether he is sincere or not. Criminal courts will do what they do and that should be the end of it.

Eric, I agree. This is a nice guy. He made a mistake and has profusely apologized. Let’s let it go!

He should be prosecuted, pay whatever fine/penalty the court determines is appropriate, and then everyone can move on...hopefully the right lesson will have been learned (not the “don’t get caught“ one).

If he is also responsible for the similar defacing at other land marks that have been reported after this one came to light (no evidence for those) I would hope he would have the integrity to own those as well and include those in his restitution to the authorities.
