Failure of Electric Cord Reel ???

Went to use our rig last week. Had about 3’ of cord pulled out while in our garage. Pushed the retract button reel went in sounded a little rough.

Arrived at our site and went to pullout. Would only allow about the same 3’ and was firmly locked at that point. Thought would try and retract nothing. Nor was there any sound from the motor.

I’ve read in previous posts that HL specs this reel from Southwire and that it is slightly smaller physically size than the one shown on their site. Mine is the earlier version doesn’t have the free spooling when pulling out.

Any ideas for repair or just replace.

Well I would remove it from the RV( pull the cord all the way out ) and open up the access plate/panel. Inspect the contacts.

Randy - sorry to hear this. Like Carl, I suggest you remove it to better examine what has failed in it. Then from there, make your repair/replace decision as they're crazy expensive (link to Shoreline product).

That said, someone on this forum replace theirs with another brand of power cord reel and saved money.

Note too that the cord is probably 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of the full reel with cord. If you end up replacing, consider replacing the reel only.

Try checking/replacing the switch first. I had trouble with mine and this helped

Maybe the drive chain jumped off and jammed up the works. I bet that is what you find!

Ya sounds jammed to me. Check the chain. After you get it un-jammed you will want to al-line the gears so it won't happen again.
Also there is a Auto reset circuit breaker up in the front battery compartment that powers that.

Power failure last night. Tested L1 and L2 at the ATS. O volts at L1. Measured at main post and all voltages are within specs. . Pulled the cord reel and now I have 120 volts at both L1 and L2 at the ATS. My surge protector now kicks in and I have full voltage inside. Must be a bad connection inside the electric cord reel. Is there any repairs that can be done or is the reel just dead and need replacement. Cost is around $800.00 to $950.00 fro the new reel. Because of the location and space I can not install a hand crank type reel. Any help in need in finding a solution. Finding a 120 v failure in the dark is not real fun. Help !

Sometimes these can be repaired. It could be burnt slip rings, or something in that area. One thing I have seen some people do is replace the cord reel with a plug to plug in the RV. This way you get rid of the cord reel all the way.

I, do to health problems, now have a SOB Class A diesel pusher. Mine does not have the power reel. I miss the power reel a lot. Well worth replacing. The cost is in the noise considering the total cost of your rig. Now the only problem I had with my power reel was the cable screws loosing in side the power reel. The neutral wire was loose and toasted my microwave, living room TV, and one AC. I more the fixed that back then and once again urge people with them to pull the cable out if the reel, open the hatch, and check the screws for tightness.

We have been dealing with this for some time now. I opened up the cover plate and tightened all of the connections. I've seen others with burnt post inside the reel. Mine were all good, however I had to keep messing with it every time I pulled it out to get a connection. by pulling it out a reeling it in several times to get it to connect. I just kept getting worse and worse as time went on. It finally gave up internally. So I replaced it and all is well again.
