Holes in battery compartment

I am in the final stages of buying a 2015Heartland Cyclone Elite 4000 and asked about the three holes in the bottom of the battery compartment. The salesman told me it was for venting the compartment. The three holes are open to the underside of the compartment and look like they would pick up a lot of water going down the highway in the rain. Is this normal?

If the battery compartment is in front, you may be looking at the area where the generator would be mounted. there is venting provided to keep it running cool.

More likely the holes are to drain it if the battery boils over. A closed box would be a problem if it was full of acid. If it’s in the forward compartment, it’s pretty safe from road spray from the truck tires.

Now when you tow in the rain, the more likely spot for water to get in is the area of the coroplast above the tires. Water coming off the tires at 60mph, or more will drive right thru that area. At least on my last several unit it has.

Mine has the holes in the battery box, never seen water get in there. I do however put rags in the holes in the winter to stop critters from getting in.

Y’all are saying the hole in the bottom of the forward battery box is for the generator. Odd because the box on our former 3670 had a cover and a vent tube to the front wall, next to the one for the battery in the side hydraulic compartment. To use that hole in the box as a vent would require removing the box to vent under the trailer, which is not a good thing unless you add a pipe to get it off to the side, away from the rig. What am I missing here?

John,

The OP said "three holes in the bottom of the battery compartment." I think "compartment" is vague and he may be referring to the entire front compartment, or could be referring to the box that holds the batteries. Some answers are for one, some for the other.

I sealed all of my knock outs for the Generator as I do not have once. Sealed on the side with adhesive fabric for corplast and liberal application of caulk on the bottom.
