Onan RV QG 5500 EVAP Error 33

We just purchased our 5th wheel. We were running the generator for several hours and the generator started a code 33 error. It's been maintenance regularly. It has been very hot here, but this was in the evening when things have cooled down a bit.

I checked my 7 page Onan 5.5 trouble code PDF and for my model there is no code 33....it jumps from code 32 to 35.

Either you miscounted the blinks or my PDF doesn't cover your exact model for proper diagnosis.

Here is one explanation of a code 33:

Here is another:

Everything I have read about code 33 is related to overheat condition. I have seen an article where the air-cool does not have a code 33, as stated.

Back in April a park we were at in Palm Springs, had an electrical issue. We were on/off generator power from Wednesday to Saturday, and the temps was around 105. The way I prevented the overheating was I left the bay door open and pulled the cover off the generator for better air flow.

Yes, we have found that too. From online research it's and overheating issue. We were running it with the compartment door open. We did not have the cover on the front off.

Our temps were high yesterday, but not that high. Worried since we have a trip planned next week. We don't need the generator when we get there but would like to run it off and on traveling to keep it comfortable in the camper.

Can you maybe direct a box fan at the generator with the compartment door open until you can get it fixed properly?

140 hours, getting close to oil change time, I think it is at 150 hours.

When it is hot outside and we test the generator or need to run it because of loss of power, I remove the front cover for extra air circulation. Try keeping the front cover off and the compartment door opened for extra air circulation, it may help with the overheating issues.

How does the oil look? Since it was overheating, it may need an oil change before the trip. With the overheating issue, the oil may have broken down and not helping with the heat dissipation.

Onan requires the front panel to stay on while the gen set is running. It is part of the air circulation designs

Just an update. My husband read where if the oil is completely full that may be causing the problem. He drained a little. Just returning from a trip to Texas it ran great in 115 heat.

Are you still removing the panel off the front of the generator while its running?
