Squirrel proof the large opening on slide rams

I found a pine cone under my rear heating duct and started to look around for the way they were getting in. I found it easily. The large opening in the frame to allow the slide arm and ram to come through is wide open for an army of squirrels. It is so big a rabbit might try. We have 3 slides effedted so 3 times the trouble. Today what I did was quick and simple. I had a light weight truck mud flap so I cut pieces 4" by 5" and drilled a 1 inch hole to line up and then I sliced through to the top side of the patch. By opening up the slice you can slide it over the ram and then fasten it to the frame. I haven't completely finished it yet. All I have to do is cut out an elongated hole for a self tapping screw with an oversize washer. I won't tighten it too much so that there is flex if the ram want to move.
