Northern Minnesota

We are planning our first 'long haul' maiden trip up to northern Minnesota the last week of June, around Ely. I found an rv park/cg in Babbitt that looks nice...Birch Lake RV Park. Has anyone stayed there and where would be a good one night stay half way up? We are in NW Indiana.

DebnAl, are you planning on going through Chicago or up and over through the U.P.? If through the U.P. we've used this place and it's a good park and quiet. A few minutes off the highway with lake frontage.

There is also a nice City Park in Tower, MN right on Lake Vermilion.

Hi DebnAl,
We don't know too much about the CG's on 94 between Chicago and MPLS.... but once you get north of MPLS/StPaul and on 35w North, we have a few suggestions but that is a bit over your 1/2 way point. We live just W. of MPLS/StPaul and heading to a couple of CG's north of Duluth on the North Shore during the last week of June and first part of July. Beautiful area!
We'd be glad to help as we can!
Wherever you stay.... make sure you bring plenty of mosquito repellent!
We'll be in Goshen for the rally.... hope to meet you there!

I believe we will be going up thru Wisconsin on RT53 but throw a couple park names out just in case we stop around Duluth. We like Duluth...stayed in town about 6 years ago. Not familiar with rv/cgs there tho.
We are hoping to come to Goshen for the day...maybe we will see ya!

Thanks!

This might be just up yer ally. This is a nice place close to I94 at Exit 88 in Osseo, WI. Just a few miles before your exit to 53 north. We've been there and there's a great place in Osseo for a good piece of pie & ice cream called the "Norske Nook" I'm drooling now.

We stayed a place called Buffalo House.... south of Duluth on 35w about 10 mi. Easy to get into Duluth! There's a couple of Casinos that have campgrounds as well. If you can get in.... north of Duluth on hwy 61 in 2 Harbors is the Burlington Bay campground. It's right on the lake. Ships coming in/out of the harbor are right out your back window.
Tower is really nice and Ray is right! That campground is nice on Lake Vermillion. Tower mine had a fire earlier this spring and I'm not sure what that status is of that yet though!

wow...Thanks guys...you have given me some great choices to check out in the next few days and hopefully get something booked. Norske Nook sounds just like the kind of place Dh and I like to go to to satisfy a sweet tooth!
I know it's towards a holiday weekend so I hope these places are not all booked up! Being new at this it really helps to know ahead of time whether a cg is nice or not. Don't need any bad experiences right off the bat.
Can't thank you guys enough!

mnkamper, would that be the Minnorca mines? Al has a safey conference in Tower and then a safety audit at the Minnorca mines...that is why we are headed up that way in June.

That Burlington Bay cg right on the lake sounds pretty nice...thank you!

I think I'm going to need a notebook for every state.

Hi DebnAl, the mine in Tower was a underground mine that's been closed and a tourist attraction for a long time. Pretty cool to visit actually. There was a fire in one of the levels this spring and the interesting was that U of MN has some experiment stations on levels lower than the fire was.

Hi mnkamper, thanks, didn't know there was a tourist attraction mine in Tower. DH says the Minorca mine is further north, still mining. And 'no thanks' not my cupatea to go underground

Also, my DH's co-worker said we should check out the KOA in Alma Center, WI for our overnight stay on the way home. Anyone stay there for a night or two?

We've been down the mine in Tower several years ago. Pretty strange feeling going straight down a mineshaft. It was pretty deep too. I think it's been closed for a few years now.
We've never been to the Alma Canter KOA. Actually didn't know it was there. It's about 20 miles south of Osseo but 4 miles north of I94. When are you guys going to MN?

We are going the last week of June. I was able to book an overnight stay on the way up (26th) at Stoney Creek RV Center in Osseo. Stoney Creek had no openings for the trip back. I went ahead and booked the KOA in Hixton for the trip back.

WOW! this booking business can be pretty nerve racking!

Banning State Park at Exit 195 on I-35 is very nice. Jay cook State park at the Proctor exit about 30 miles further north is also very nice. And the Grand Casino RV park at Hinckley is 5 star for about 15 bucks per night. It is at MP 185 on I-35.
