Traveler's Guide to the Firearms Laws of the Fifty States

Here's a link to a book that some of you folks that travel with firearms might be interested in. The instructor of my last CHL class gave it to us with a warning that the laws in every state can change at any time between publication dates. The latest one is 2012 and it seems to be a good concise guide. For CHL holders I find the reciprocity status of the states useful. You all may know of this book, but it was new to me.

Both would be the interesting answer but a legal listing would be what I would like. Since we are traveling to Yellowstone there could be many opportunties along the way to pick up firearms.

That is a good reference but keep in mind that laws do change. I have a FFL and a Class 3 license and try to keep current. My wife and I just bought a 2011 Bighorn and are semiretired in the civilian world also retired Army. It doesn't hurt to goggle the state if you are cnocerned but for the most part the Travelers Guide will work. It is written by legal experts.

Well, the simple answer for handgun purchases out of state is that federal law requires that the gun be shipped to an FFL in your home state, who will do the required background check and transfer. You can't legally buy a handgun "somewhere on your way to Yellowstone" and just take it back to NJ with you. Long guns can be purchased from an FFL out of state and transported by you back to NJ. I have no idea what the state laws are in NJ. There are many good websites on the internet where you can buy a gun and have it shipped to your FFL. Here are a couple:

You just need to find someone local who is willing to accept out of state purchases for you.
My local guy (works out of his basement) will do the paperwork and accept the transfer for a a flat $30 fee, plus the NICS ($16 I think).
He also only charges one NICS fee for multiple gun purchases the same day. Some dealers will charge you for each gun for the one call they have to make.

I haven't tried them yet but the hardware store on Rt 9 by Sea Pirate always comes up with the best pricing when I do a search.

Long guns are still fairly simple. Through a dealer you will still be doing the background in New Jersey. But, the transfer of long guns only requires 2 copies of a fire arms transfer record, 1 for you 1 for the other party.

Two other resources:

Davidson's gallery of guns is a great search tool, enter what you are looking forward and it will show the closest dealers with the price (whatever you use for a zip code).

The national parks are something to watch as regards to firearms, but he laws are supposed to be changing to be a bit more liberal.

For travelers also carry a copy of the federal law of interstate transportation of firearms as MANY cops are not familiar with it. This will aid you in passing through a state you are not licensed to carry in. [h=2][/h]
