Anyone know of some nice campgrounds with electric and water along the coast from LA north to Monterey? Don't have a generator so would like a place close to the ocean but still need shore line hookups.

I don't remember any names but there were several in the Big Sur area south of Monterey. We camped there a lot in the sixties when I was stationed at Monterey.

I am going to recommend you check out RVParkReviews.com for the California section. Pick a starting coastal city like Oxnard, and at the top right of each page are nearby cities with RV parks listed. You should have no problems from Oxnard up to San Luis Obispo finding parks. The Central Coast from Santa Maria to San Simeon can be VERY crowded this time of year due to the heat in the Central Valley (Fresno-Bakersfield). I would research and think long and hard if I wanted to tow a 5er on Highway 1 from San Simeon (thru Big Sur) to the Monterey Penninsula. It is switchback abundant, cut into a near-vertical mountainside, 2 lane roadway, next to the ocean. If you are going North, you will be on the landward side, which is a little less nail-biting. Tour busses do traverse this road daily.
You can join US Hwy 101 at San Luis Obispo and take it as an inland route to Salinas, which is just 15 miles from the Monterey Penninsula for an alternate route.

Here are three I have stayed at in Big Sur.
The first two are private campgrounds and have hookups.

This is one of my favorite state parks and has water and dump station only. Pfeiffer Big Sur state park

SeldomSeen,
Regarding travel on Highway 1 below Big Sur, I hauled a 31" SOB fiver south on this road a few years back. No problem. (about the same size as yours, I believe)
It is always a breathtaking drive if you feel confident in your driving skills. (I believe this is considered one of the 10 most scenic drives in the U.S.)
I have traveled this road since the sixties and it has been widened and improved a great deal, in fifty years.

If you are not sure about driving up Hwy 1, take wdk450's advice and go up 101 from San Luis Obispo to Salinas, then towards Monterey and drop back south to Big Sur. Very easy drive.

If you decide to go up Hwy 1 above San Luis Obispo, this is a nice state park I have driven through, but never actually stayed there;

We enjoyed our stay at Ventura Beach RV Park. It's just off the 101 and easy to get to. Being close to the 101 your get the traffic noise thou, so it's best to ask for a spot at the entrance. We also enjoyed Flying Flags in Solvang, it also easy off the 101. It's a tourist town in the mountains, we love wine tasting and shopping there. Carpinteria state park is nice also, your rig must be under 36' so we stayed next door in a condo.
