As our new Landmark GM works through many ideas for a future Landmark product, he'd love to get your feedback on what you feel the Landmark kitchen needs/deserves. If you you have an idea you feel would resonate with most Landmark buyers, Tom would like to hear it. Let's use this thread to give Tom some feedback.

Here's a few things to think about, just to get the conversation going...

  • Plate storage in drawer (with adjustable dowels for varying plate sizes)
  • Coffee station on a roll-out from a cabinet
  • Designated slots for storage of sink and stove covers

I know Mary would like to roll out shelving in the Pantry,With one shelve for coffee makers, toasters and other electronic kitchen gadgets. With an outlet inside the pantry near that shelve.

Jim - thanks for posting the kitchen questionnaire. I'm working hard to come up with the best possible Landmark and the best way for me to accomplish this is to hear from the actual users. The Newport proto is scheduled to go online in March so I'm quickly running out of time to make changes. We have some exciting things in the proto and can't wait to show them to everyone. Please respond to Jim's post and let's make Landmark the best it can be.

Thanks Tom

Well good and bad news - I tried to get a coffee station like "other" brands have but found out its against code to put a 110v outlet inside a cabinet. The good news is that we are compliant - the bad news is I can't do it. Not yet anyway - I still think its a great idea and a way to save valuable countertop space. I will push engineering to dig in more to the compliance rules and regulations. Thanks for your post..... Tom

I can assure you I'm always watching. I don't always respond but I'm always watching and I'm very interested. When we get the Newport proto offline I will be taking it on a road trip much like I did with my previous brand. Florida, Texas and Arizona are on the schedule - meeting some of our biggest dealer for their thoughts and ideas and stopping along the way at several camp grounds to let people tour the product. It's how I learn and how we make products better. The first Deadwood :) had fixed shelves in the pantry, no slots for sink and stove covers, plain glass shower doors, no hand rail, no picture frames and no ceiling fan - yes no ceiling fan. Not because we forgot but it didn't come in time to make it on the first proto. We also designed a sofa without a hide-abed option. Designed for comfort - not sleeping. Guess what - that didn't fly either - so we quickly added a hide-a-bed option. After a 3700 mile maiden voyage we came back and completely reworked some key areas. Today that product dominated the high-end market. BUT NOT FOR LONG - Landmark has more potential than any other brand I've ever worked with and I'm excited to get started. The owners groups and forums are great and I'm excited to form a relationship with all of you as we grow this great brand together.

Talk soon.

Good point - not sure why that doesn't apply. I will get with our engineering team to figure out why that is. I'm in the process of designing a sink as we speak. It won't be as deep - but I too like a single bowl. Most people I speak with ask for it. The sink idea is as follows - large single bowl, sink covers with cutting board material on the backside, the drain moved to the far right hand back corner to maximize your storage under the sink. The reason it's not super deep - we all want a dishwasher and under the sink is the best place. We don't want to give up silverware drawers and trash and for a dishwasher - cool options aren't so cool if you have to give up good standard features to get them. Just a little insight - more to come.

DW suggests:

Lower the microwave a few inches - she's 5'4" and it's a slight reach for her.
Add cabinet over the microwave to use the wasted space.
Use a light color veneer/paneling on the inside of the kitchen cabinets so things inside can be better seen.

I'd suggest some insulation behind/under the cabinets under the oven and refrigerator (if that's even there anymore) and inside the island. Those areas get really cold in cold weather.

Structurally, beef up the floor where the kitchen drain makes a horizontal run. Cutting a channel for that pipe creates a weak area in the floor.

Kind of a kitchen suggestion: raise the circuit breaker panel and fuse box. We're all too old to get down to floor level when the hair dryer trips the breaker.

The Induction Cook Tops are becoming very popular it seems. Is anyone making a small one that will work in an RV? Might be good for an option and not have an oven. A good microwave with the halftime cooking for the oven. I know my wife really likes the induction cooking and also likes the halftime cooking.

Everyone that sees the glass stove cooktop with raised burners in my ElkRidge likes it, it's the combo with the Apollo half-time oven. I know they are out of business, but an easier to clean gas stovetop would be nice in the Landmark.

In our San Antonio the only access to the trash is under the sink from the back of the island. How about opening up the front of the island so you can access it from both sides. Also please put stronger fasteners on the barrel shaped cabinet door. When we got our unit the door had broken off during transport and I ended up having to put a window latch on it to keep it closed. Love the design of the barrel it just needs to be able to close better.

In our 2010 Pinehurst there was an opening over the microwave that we could store our stove top and sink covers. Our new 2014 San Antonio has a door on that space that will not stay open so can't keep the covers up there anymore. We went to Lowes and bought a wire rack that we put under the sink to hold all of the covers and our cutting boards.

With the total lack of sufficient countertop space in this new San Antonio, we usually keep one of the sink covers on the sink just to give us a little more countertop space. I'd hate to see a single sink that would take away the ability to have this "extra" countertop space.

I LOVE Dan's suggestion of raising the circuit breaker panel and fuse box. Thank heavens I don't have to check them too often, but when I do, it's on hands and knees or laying on my belly. Getting down is not so bad, it's getting back up.:D:D

Just for clarification the single bowl sink still has two sink covers. Both will sit flush and have real cutting board material on the backside.

Love the suggestions - keep them coming.

Minimum microwave height is either 17 1/2" or 19 1/2" above the cooktop. I will check code and make sure we are at the minimum height.

Moving the the breaker boxes up to a more accessible point is a great idea. I will work on that for sure.

Lighter colored wallboard inside our cabinets is also a great suggestion that I wouldn't have thought of even though my eyes are starting to go. I will work on that as well.

Induction cooktop is already in the works.

Lady E the RV Cooking specialist would kill me if we didn't include a convection microwave with significant output wattage 1100w I think is the minimum to be able to really cook in a convection microwave oven. I will check on that as well.

The trash can, silverware/ utensil and plate drawers are going to be accessible on both sides of the island. My purchasing manager has been looking for a good place to buy two way drawer guides. This is an idea I've had for a long time - so good to see we are on the same page.

Thanks for for all the suggestions.

I like a lot of the suggestions I've heard so far. I also love the barrel shaped cabinet doors, and add another voice for some kind of pullout shelves. I know Harry would love to have the breaker boxes in a higher location.

I would like to see an appliance garage. And the design for the sink sounds great, but can you also work on how they are connected to the countertop. Harry didn't enjoy squeezing himself into the little space under there trying to replace the connectors after the sink came loose and started falling in.

Tom, I'm wondering about using the sink covers as cutting boards and am assuming you would turn them upside down and place on a section of countertop to use as a cutting board. You might want to test the idea a bit to see whether it generates extra wear on the countertop and sink cover surfaces. Plenty of people have remarked on how easy it is to put fine scratches into the countertop.

I second the induction cooktop. We currently use a True induction counter top model with 2 units. They make a model designed to drop into the counter top and it is only about 1/2" wider than the standard stove. We'd also like to see a real backsplash.

Correct - they would sit on top of the counter. I have a new solid surface top coming that should do a great job of hiding everyday wear and tear - another advantage to solid surface is the ability to make it look brand new with very little effort. I can get the recommended care instructions from LG to Jim B so he can post for everyone them.

In addition to the trash and silverware drawers pulling out on both sides of the island - I'm also asking for the center section of the island behind the sink to also open up. This would give complete and easy access to the sink fittings and back of the dishwasher. We always hope things don't go wrong but in the case something does - having easier access would be nice. Most of the full-timers I meet are pretty handy and could fix a lot of little things if they had better access points.

Thanks again for the ideas.
