Air conditioner cutting on and off

Need help finding out the problem with my air conditioner it's keeps cutting on high and low , like the compressor is confused, anyone have this problem before? Does it need charged? Any answers would be great PS its not cooling the best either , thanks

On AUTO, as the ambient temp approaches the set point temp, the mode gets shifted. The fan speed changes and the compressor may pause for a few seconds.

Try dropping the thermostat setting four or five degrees.
