ATF: Cyclone - 2017 CY 4250 Generator Breaker keeps tripping

Top 30 Amp breaker trips after about 30 min to a couple of hours, usually when the center AC is running; more frequent during the day. The interior breakers are not tripping. The Cummins service rep seems to think there is a wiring problem between the generator and the breaker panel. Any ideas about were to start finding the problem.

Hi Gonehuntinrfishin,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum.

Some of the Onan generators come with two 30 amp breakers and others with a 20 and a 30. Regardless, the generators are spec'd at 48.5 amps total. So depending on what's pulling power and how much, you could simply be asking too much of the generator, causing one of the breakers to trip.

If in addition to the center air conditioner, you're also running other loads, it's not hard to get close to 30 amps on one leg or the other of your power system. If you have a residential refrigerator, when the compressor starts, it can pull extra amperage - perhaps more than 8 amps. And the Power Converter is running in the background pulling 2-12 amps as it changes modes. And I think sometimes it can peak above 15 amps.

So, is there any possibility you just have to many amps being drawn?

Your Cummins guy could be on to something. In addition to monitoring your load as Dan mentioned be sure to check the connections in the transfer switch.
Be sure that your generator is off and you are not plugged into shore power before entering the transfer switch box.

Peace

Good suggestions above and certainly worth investigating. I have the version with one 30A and one 20A breaker. The 20A breaker would trip like yours, after about 20-30 minutes under certain loads, but not in an overloaded state. Determined it was a weakened breaker, which when replaced did not occur again. Never overlook the simple fix :)
