Cold weather use

This might sound odd. But we live in FL and have never taken a unit out of FL in the winter. We are going to go up into Pigeon Forge for a week. Weather is supposed to be in the teens at night. We never have teens in FL. Hubby says we need to disconnect the water at night or leave the water running. What are we supposed to do and what about the black or gray tanks freezing? I don't want to haul those tanks home full! Thanks

Hi Jessbell79,

You'll need to plan on running the furnace a lot and using a lot of propane. Leaving the water running in an RV creates risks you wouldn't necessarily have in a house and I would advise against it.

You can get many of your questions answered in our owner-written Water Systems Winter Usage Guide.

Disconnect the water at night and use your fresh water tank. Set the furnace to a comfy temp and watch your propane tanks. You will use more than you think.

I am a retired HVAC/R technician and have entered many customer homes who thought leaving the water running would prevent it from freezing. Needless to say it didn't help. Just makes a cool looking icicle from faucet to sink. Disconnecting water and leaving heat on is the answer. Also you could purchase a heated water hose.

Going to unhook at night then. Hope we don't have poopsickles in the black tank. It's supposed to be 7 degrees one night. How long will propane last 😂

Buy a couple of ceramic heaters and use them to supplement the propane furnace. The heated hose will allow you have running water without having to have water in your holding tank. Also enclosing the hose inside a pool noodle will protect it from freezing.

Our new cyclone is stationary and will use when visiting for a couple of months. How much is involved in having local propane company put outside tank and then hook into rv system?

Typically you need only call the local propane company and provide a credit card. If you ask them to provide a hose terminating in a POL adapter, you can just unscrew the pigtail from one of your propane tanks and screw it to the POL adapter on the hose.
