SmartPlug install

We discovered this product at Camping World last summer, and were instantly impressed.

I hate the way our power cord attaches to the rig, never knowing if it's seated properly and the plastic secure ring is hard to turn, especially in cold or rainy weather. Plus, it never seemed like the connection was "tight" even after securing the ring.

Well, introducing SmartPlug, which replaces the connection of your power cord and receptacle on the coach. The new male and female connection is sooo much better, water tight and easy to use, in any weather condition.

I contacted the company to learn more about the product, and received a sample to try. We opted to buy a new power cord, rather than cut the end off our current cord.

It took us about 2 hours to do the entire job: replacing the cord end and replacing the receptacle.

The instructions are very clear, with easy to follow pictures and written instructions.

The product is very well manufactured and easy to work with.

We highly recommend it if you hate the power cord connection on your rig! They come in 30amp and 50amp.

Edit: I just found where they are selling a 50amp cord with the end already attached. Even easier! Just replace your cord and the receptacle and you're done!

The plug has a rounded top and a flat bottom. Can't go in wrong. I looked at those several years ago and found 2 things. Expensive for a plug (you thought Marinco was expensive?). And it seemed like a solution in search of a problem. I passed. My 2 cents.

The product touts a more water tight connection, and better/more electrical contact of the blades, plus easier to connect and disconnect.

I see the cons as: price- you have to want to make this upgrade. Much like the new steps out there, it's reinvented.

Second, one you have this installed, you cannot use any other power cord but yours. So you'll have to make sure you have it along for service work if left at a dealer. This didn't deter us.

I'm not trying to sell it or get anything in return for promoting it, just trying a product that solves a problem for us, especially when we take our rig to colder climates.

I installed one two years ago. No more concern about getting the connection twisted tight or crossthreading the locking collar. It also has a thermal breaker built in.

Looked up the prices. if you search around, the plug and socket is about $170.00. The 50A built cord is a marine cord with a twist on 50A connector on the other end. It sells for $580.00. I have a power reel so don''t need this. If I did, I most likely would have changed to this connector. Quick easy and water resistant.
