Cabinet Vent

So, has anyone thoroughly investigated this black hole? Anyone’s ideas as to its purpose?
I pushed a tape down to I assume the bottom where it stopped at the kitchen floor level.
Next time I’m behind the basement wall I’ll investigate further. In the meantime, what say you??

I think it could be a return air opening for the heater.
I have the same opening and that's all I can think of.

Likely. It’s what I’m thinking too but hardly efficient. I’ve been thinking of cutting in a cold air return through the bottom step riser. Makes more sense to pull cold air from the floor out than the warm from the ceiling to recirculate through the furnace if the furnace even draws any return air down that cavity
