Furnace problems show up when it gets cold

If you're turning on the furnace and it doesn't work, here are a few things to check.

  • Make sure you're using the correct thermostat to get heat. You may have 2 or 3 thermostats but only one of them operates the furnace.
  • If the blower doesn't push air right away, check for a blown fuse.
  • Check battery level either on the control panel or at the levelup control panel. You need a good 12V DC supply to run the blower and fire the ignition.
  • If the blower runs, and while outside you hear the gas valve operating but get no flame, check propane. Close tank valves and re-open verrrry slowly so as to not activate the overflow protection device in the tank. Light a burner on the stove top to purge any air in the propane lines.
  • Check the exterior furnace vents for insects, leaves, other obstructions.
  • Make sure that nothing is blocking interior floor vents or the air return.

Obviously this is not a comprehensive list. But it's a list of things that are common problems that don't require any expertise to correct.

If you need additional information, there's a troubleshooting guide written by Gary Brinck, located here.
