2020 Mallard IDM301-prewired for invertor to run refrigerator?

Is there an easy way to install an inverter to run the refrigerator on 12Vdc while travelling? The fridge is only 120Vac or propane, not a 3-way. I didn't find anything about it in the owners manual or in the manual for the refrigerator.

    Hi duskoski,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum.

To use battery power to run the refrigerator on 120V AC, you'd need to install an inverter - probably 1,000 watts, with the 120V AC output going to a small transfer switch. The transfer switch would also get power from a circuit breaker. When you're connected to shore power, the transfer switch would supply the refrigerator from shore power. When shore power is disconnected, the transfer switch would supply power from the inverter. You'll need to add a battery as 1 is probably not enough. There would also be some fusing between the batteries and inverter.

If you're comfortable working with electrical components, this is certainly doable. Ease of install would vary considerably based on floorplan of your trailer.

Our Residential Refrigerator User Guide, in this folder, has a block diagram showing how the major components go together.

All that said, it'd be a lot easier to run the refrigerator on 12V DC/Propane which is what most people do. If you're concerned about the open flame, you could use a block of ice or dry ice in the fridge while towing.
