We've been in Las Vegas for a while longer than expected but it has given us the opportunity to scope out all the campgrounds.
We "moochdocked" at my sister's property first which worked really well. Great view, great price
however it was quite a bit across town for what we were doing so we eventually moved. There really isn't that much choice in Las Vegas, at least not as much as I was expecting. The campground at Circus Circus is the only one that is on the "Strip" - I thought I had read that it was closed after KOA went to another campground, but they said they reopened 11/1. Very friendly staff, but they do not offer any discounts (AAA, Good Sam's, weekly, monthly, etc.) at this time though they said they've gotten lots of requests for them. The place was almost totally empty, so perhaps they will change this going forward. They've closed off part of it for a building in progress, but to me at least, it was still huge (and empty). Their rates were $36 Sun-Thurs, $46 Fri-Sat, and $70 on holidays such as Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve.
We are staying out on Boulder Highway at Arizona Charlie's, which really is a long way (we are mostly going to Phil's family, 5 miles west of the Strip). We are in a pull thru on a weekly rate of $204/week = $29 a night. (this includes 12% tax so the real rate is lower). There are other comparable campgrounds in the area including Sam's Town-now a KOA) but they were more expensive. There are a couple that are cheaper ($89/weekly) but both had dog weight limits of 20-30#. Our yellow Lab Shea weighs about 75# so that was out.
Arizona Charlie's has been really good. I would stay here again. It gets a fair amount of airplanes flying overhead (must depend on flight patterns because it isn't constant). Nice showers/bathroom, laundry room, Cable TV, FHU. Security guy on bicycle or golf cart riding around regularly. Not much street noise but we are in back of park. Up towards the front, you'd probably hear more from Boulder Highway. There are lots of restaurants and casinos in the area.
Looked into Oasis which is at the south end of the strip, (waaaay south) but had comparable prices to Circus Circus. And not any more convenient for us. Might have more amenities though.
There are a couple further south on Boulder Highway including a Passport America park (3 days @ 50% off) Duck Creek but Phil went and looked at it and didn't care for it. Plus very inconvenient for us.
There is also a Thousand Trails park just down the street from us. We considered buying one of their zone memberships (Thru them directly) to see how we liked it before committing to buying a resale full membership. You can also stay there as a non-member. They had availability, can't remember exactly what it cost, I think slightly more than Arizona Charlie's.
In hindsight, I wish we would've done the TT membership. A zone pass is good for one year (only in that zone - in this case Arizona, Nevada, California. Colorado and New Mexico are also in this zone, but have no participating parks.) The zone membership is $545 but they are doing $100 off right now. So we could've had our stay here in Las Vegas and Palm Springs (next leg of this year-long RV tour) included in that so that was a mistake. We've already spent that here at Arizona Charlie's but we were both sick and not thinking clearly! I guess we didn't know how much we would be able to use it since we'll only be in California for a month before heading east to Arizona and that held us back from making a decision. Lesson learned!!!
